The chemotherapy suite is situated at the top of Medical Day Care, level 1 Gate 5B. The unit has 10 chairs and it is the only area of the trust where chemotherapy is given for cancer. The unit caters for patients with a haematological malignancy such as, Lymphoma, Leukaemia, Myelodysplasia and Myeloma.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a band 6 nurse to join our friendly and supportive team in the chemotherapy suite.
You should have at least 2 years chemotherapy administration experience and would be expected to manage the daily work load and coordinate the unit activity under the guidance of the Chemotherapy CNS.
A wide range of chemotherapeutic agents are administered with patients receiving intravenous and/or oral chemotherapy and other anticancer therapies. All regimens used are in accordance with NBT policies and guidelines
The post will allow the use of skills such as venepuncture, cannulation and administration of blood and blood products. There is also an expanding PICC line service for patients in the chemo suite.
Chemotherapy is predominantly administered in the Chemo suite between the hours of 9am-5pm as most treatments are given on an outpatient basis. Chemotherapy can however be administered in designated areas, for example, gate 27B and ITU for those patients that have more complex medical needs, or for those chemotherapy regimens that require a longer infusion time.
The post holder should have at least 2 years chemotherapy administration experience and be competent in caring for the sick patient within the chemotherapy setting, have knowledge of oncological emergencies and how to deal with them, know when to inform medical professionals and what can safely be dealt with in a nurse-led environment.
