Role Summary

The Creative Learning department is an integral part of The Rep. We engage 50,000 young people each year, often providing a first experience of drama and theatre to educational settings and youth theatres. Our work spans the West Midlands and wider regions.

Our bespoke learning programme is widely recognised for its excellence and our Drama Practitioners play a critical role in successful delivery. This involves working with schools, youth theatres and community partners to both embed drama into school curriculum, direct theatre performance, and deliver activities that encourage the development of young people on both an academic and/or holistic level. We strive to stimulate creativity, build communication skills and encourage a collaborative approach to performance.

This role could involve working in any of the following:

- Early Years settings
- Primary and Secondary Schools
- SEND schools
- Young Rep (our youth theatre programme)
- After school clubs
- FE/HE settings

You may work in a number of the settings outlined above. As well as meeting the settings individual targets and aims, you will promote and profile the work of The Rep in an imaginative, exciting, relevant and inspiring way.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

- Supporting the theatre’s strategies to increase participation and learning through theatre
- Adapting your practice to meet the access needs of the participants
- Acting as a mentor and role-model for our young people
- Engaging young people in developing their creative and performance skills
- Working with the Head of Education and School Staff to develop and deliver curriculum-based projects
- Devise and deliver a learning programme that reflects a commitment to life- long learning and offers a broad and equal range of opportunity
- Maintain a keen awareness of developments in arts education and endeavour to ensure that The Rep is leading in such areas.
- To support and promote partner schools’ codes of practice regarding discipline, professional conduct and equality of opportunity
- Devising learning programmes to support The Rep’s artistic objectives
- Working with the Head of Young Rep to create exciting performance-based projects
- To deliver exciting summer schools which take place at Birmingham Rep
- To create resource packs for productions at Birmingham Rep
- To host post-show discussions
- To work in collaboration with other members of staff to develop and manage artistic projects. This particularly involves communicating with Production and Artistic teams at The Rep to organise backstage activity for young people in our programmes.
- To monitor, evaluate and record work according to relevant criteria provided by schools, funders, and The Rep
- To report to potential stakeholders through documentation and by attendance at consultation and open events
- To maintain an up-to-date awareness of the subject area, educational/industry advances, and personal and professional development
- To support and promote partner schools’ codes of practice regarding discipline, professional conduct and equality of opportunity
- Be up to date and confident in following The Rep’s safeguarding policies and procedures.
- Report and feedback to the CL team and the wider organisation on developments with partners and maintain a high profile internally for this area of work
- Ensure that diversity and access are positively considered in all aspects of the role


Person Specification

​You must have...

- Experience of drama facilitation in education and community settings, especially in Primary and Secondary school settings.
- Experience of drama workshop delivery to young people with additional needs
- Experience facilitating drama sessions with Early Years children
- Experience directing theatre productions
- Knowledge of a production process
- Knowledge of Applied Theatre practice, process drama, teacher-in-role techniques and drama conventions
- Knowledge of current trends within Drama and Theatre Education
- Knowledge of examples of good practice in community arts
- Knowledge of safeguarding issues, particularly in relation to vulnerable young people
- Confident ability to devise and lead workshops
- Good I.T and presentation skills
- Effective communicator and strong team-worker
- Willingness to share skills and learn from others
- Motivation to develop young people’s learning and creativity


Terms and Conditions

Period of Work: This is a fixed term contract for 12 months, subject to successful completion of a probationary period of 3 months.

Pay: The salary is £22,957.60 per annum, on a part time basis of 31.2 hours per week. The full time equivalent salary for this role is £28,697.

Hours: 31.2 hours per week (4 days per week), Tuesday – Friday 9am-5.15pm.

Holidays: 25 days per year plus bank holidays rising to 30 days plus bank holidays with continuous service. This is pro rata for part time staff. The holiday year runs from 1 September to 31 August each year.

Notice Period: 1 month

Location of Work: You will spend much of your week based in school premises, and on Fridays your main place of work will be The Rep in Birmingham. You may be required to work permanently or temporarily at other locations locally.
