Summary

JOB SUMMARY To be responsible for the Decontamination and regulation of Endoscopes throughout the Endoscopy Unit at Beacon Medical Services Group Limited. To carry responsibility for the management of the Decontamination area, making effective use of resources and maintaining the highest standards. To always act in accordance with the Trust Decontamination Policy and under direction from the British Society of Gastroenterology guidelines (BSG) and Health Technical memorandum (HTM) guidelines. Main Responsibilities Professional/Clinical 1. Continually develop and maintain a high-quality decontamination service of Endoscopes. 2. Undertake manual and automated disinfection and decontamination of all endoscopes as per BMSG policies and unit protocols. 3. Ensure traceability processes are adhered to at all times. 4. Demonstrate sound planning and organisational skills by planning own workload. Pre-assess and prepare equipment as required as per specific patient needs, ensuring endoscope and subsidiary equipment is prepared and ready for use prior to the arrival of patients. 5. Partake in the development of the service through involvement and input into steering/working groups. 6. Undertake daily monitoring and recording of performance of Automated Endoscope Reprocessor (AER). 7. Ensure all records relating to equipment testing are accurate, clear, concise, legible and in accordance with the device specifications. 8. Adhere to advise from BMSG regarding remedial actions required in relation to final rinse water testing results. 9. Perform leak testing on all endoscopes immediately after use to ensure integrity of endoscope prior to manual and automated reprocessing. 10. Throughout Endoscopy sessions ensure availability of suitable endoscope through efficient and effective reprocessing mechanisms. 11. Prior to Endoscopy session commencing, ensure all endoscopes stored within the Endoscopy storage cabinet are validated for use and undertake automated reprocessing as required. 12. Partake in regular external training to maintain knowledge and establish developments in practice. Implement new policies and disseminate to all staff as required. 13. To have a sound knowledge of all Endoscopes and their relevant parts and channel configuration to ensure correct dismantling, decontamination and assembly. 14. Undertake regular care of all Endoscopes, ensuring service contracts are fulfilled. Liaise regularly with BMSG Management team to report any deficiencies. Administrative/Managerial 1. Represent the decontamination area when attending Endoscopy User Group meetings and feedback relevant information as required. 2. Develop skills and knowledge which enable participation in complex activities. 3. Monitor and maintain stock levels of associated endoscopic equipment. 4. Contribute to the design, development, and participation in new working practices and patterns following consultation and agreement with all concerned parties. Knowledge and Skills 1. Develop expert clinical knowledge appropriate to area of responsibility. 2. Use professional judgement and initiative to promote safe practice. 3. Demonstrate knowledge of resource management. 4. Possess specialist knowledge and expertise within the field of decontamination. 5. Demonstrate expert knowledge in the checking, assembly and use of endoscopes and associated specialist equipment. Effort and Environment 1. Participate frequently in tasks requiring physical effort for long periods to ensure availability of specific endoscopes as per session requirements. 2. Deal with contaminated endoscopes and bodily fluids on a regular basis. 3. Maintain contemporaneous records at all times. 4. Required to stand in restricted positions for long periods of the working day. 5. Required to wear restrictive garments for long periods of the working day. Risk Management (Health and Safety) 1. You will follow risk management/COSHH procedures at all times. BMSG policies and procedures and Decontamination procedures are retained within the unit. 2. You are responsible for Risk Management issues in respect of yourself and your colleagues. 3. If you identify a potential hazard you should report it to your manager/supervisor at once. If in doubt you should speak to your manager for guidance. 4. You must always use safety equipment provided and report any defects to your manager.
