To function effectively as a member of the DTU team and to ensure the provision and development of an efficient and high quality surgical service.
To deliver a holistic care package, which is current, evidence based and effective.
The Band 5 Registered Practitioner requires a broad knowledge and skill base including communication and team working skills, in order that they contribute to the smooth running of the DTU.
The Band 5 Registered Practitioner will actively seek out learning opportunities for both self and others, providing support and assessment to junior members of the team and other learners.
The Band 5 DTU Practitioner will work in each speciality/area in order to gain experience and to develop the necessary skills to participate effectively in the service as required.
As with all other members of staff the Band 5 DTU Practitioner must perform within their scope of practice and not exceed the boundaries of competence. They will remain accountable for their actions and omissions.
In the absence of senior staff, the Band 5 DTU Practitioner will oversee the running of the department, whilst promoting a positive standard of healthcare to patients, relatives, carers and staff.
The Registered Practitioner will supervise juniors/learners, support them and offer feedback on performance as necessary.

Key Responsibilities


Provide Peri-operative care :
The Pre-operative Phase
• Admission and preparation of the patient including interventions and investigations.
• Prepare the Perioperative environment, procedure rooms and recovery bay.
• Communication effectively with patients, their relatives and colleagues.
• Report appropriately any faulty equipment or sterility problems to the team leader.
• Admit patients into the department confirming the patient’s identity and completing all necessary documentation.
• Oversee the care of the patient, maintaining patient
confidentiality and dignity at all times
• Co-ordinate the safe transfer and movement of patients throughout the unit
• maintain patients privacy and dignity at all times
• Maintain a clean, safe environment, communicating and working effectively with the perioperative team.

The Intra-operative Phase
• observe and support the patient during the intra-operative phase.

The Post-operative Phase

•Receive handover from the scrub practitioner
•Receive handover from the scrub practitioner
• Monitor the patient’s physiological parameters and provide support as required.
• Co-ordinate the patient pathway.
• Provide the patient with refreshments where required.
• Perform or supervise all care interventions.
• Discharge the patient, following agreed protocols, completing all documentation.

Professional Responsibilities
The Registered Practitioner will:

• Comply with Health and Safety regulations; monitoring, reporting or taking direct action against breaches of these as appropriate.
• Establish and maintain effective communications between departments
• Ensure that they are well-presented to those outside area of work
• Participate in regular meetings of DTU Staff.
• Participate in mandatory training programmes
• Participate in standards and quality improvement procedures
• To comply with Trust and departmental policies to provide a safe and effective environment for both patients and staff (Located on the Trust Intranet site)
• Participate in any audit of DTU practice.
• Mentor and support new staff as directed
• Contribute towards maintaining a cost effective service
• Contribute to the implementation of change
