Summary
An opportunity to work at Barts Heart and Thorax Centre, the largest Cardiothoracic Centre in Europe. The service would like to appoint proactive and highly-motivated individuals to join the complex tertiary service provided by Cardiothoracic Surgery. Applicants will need to have a broad experience in ward based medical work. This post will start August 2023 for a term of 12 months.
The appointee will be mainly managing the care of adult cardiac and thoracic patients on the ward, will have time in theatre and will also have the opportunity to develop a research and audit portfolio. There is a consultant led ward round every morning attended by Senior Fellow, Junior Fellow, Nursing staff and Pharmacists. There will be opportunities to undertake a wide range of procedures eg: pleural drainage. You will work within a team of 11 Junior Fellows and one nurse practitioner.

Clinical fellow posts are available for six months. The post holders will join a team of 11 SHOs on a 1a banded rota. Duties will primarily be on the surgical wards but the rota has been configured to allow equitable access to theatre and also the opportunity to enhance their portfolio. The post holder will work closely with his/her SHO colleagues as well as cardiothoracic surgery registrars and the ITU team.
The post is suitable for candidates interested in a surgical career as well as anaesthetics, ITU and cardiology and who have completed a minimum of Foundation Training or equivalent. The post offers plenty of surgical exposure (for those interested in a surgical career) and opportunities to join cardiac and thoracic theatres. There is also the opportunity to join the anaesthetic and ITU medical teams to learn associated skills. Applicants with an interest in Cardiology will also benefit from this post. The department will tailor the training programme to suite the career aspirations of each applicant. Applicants from outside the UK are encouraged.

Additionally, the trust Skills Lab at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel offers equipment to enhance surgical skills and the trust’s education department offers several courses relevant to surgical training.

Research
Extensive research facilities exist in the trust and especially at the Bart’s Heart Centre, where several studies are currently ongoing. Research is actively encouraged within the department and with other departments on the trust.
