The Visitor Economy drives growth and creates jobs, significantly boosting local economies. VisitBritain’s latest estimates indicate that 41.2 million inbound visitors contributed £31.5bn to the economy in 2024, with many tourists citing our vibrant culture and heritage offer as one of their main motivators for visiting the UK. Global tourism is projected to grow by 5% year-on-year but the UK is operating in a highly competitive field to capture that demand. In the medium term, HMG has committed to increasing visitor numbers to 50 million per year by 2030.

We are a friendly and dynamic team based between London and Manchester, looking for a resourceful Executive Officer to join us. The team is based in the Visitor Economy, Heritage, Loans and Art Collection (VEHLAC) Directorate.

The DCMS Visitor Economy Team is responsible for i) working with Ministers to set the Government’s tourism policy, and ii) managing the Department’s relationship with VisitBritain and VisitEngland, our national tourist boards. We also have a number of work strands, including domestic tourism, inbound tourism, business events and short term tourism accommodation.

This role represents a great opportunity to work in a dynamic team, in one of Whitehall’s most exciting Departments.

Some of your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the Minister for Tourism in their engagement with Parliament through drafting responses to correspondence, parliamentary questions, and briefing them for public appearances.
  • Supporting the Minister for Tourism in their engagement with the industry (hotels, airlines, attractions, workforce, representative bodies etc.), through advising on invites, and providing briefings and - where necessary - drafting speeches ahead of public engagements.
  • Providing business support to the wider DCMS tourism team, including meeting logistics and office management.
  • Taking on policy responsibility for one or more discrete policy areas.
