To supervise and participate in the out-of-hours operation of various areas in Automated Blood Sciences as directed by the Night Shift Manager, working in collaboration with the senior scientific staff in providing an efficient and effective service within the resources available and to ensure the maintenance of scientific standards of HSL. Investigation and analysis of samples by the application of techniques and testing in the following sections: Routine Haematology and Coagulation, Biochemistry, Immunology, Virology and associated areas. The post holder will be required to work within any section of the department including core and unsocial hours as required. 1. To supervise various grades of scientific and support staff 2. To ensure staffing levels are optimised for the requirements of the department. In conjunction with the section heads to maintain staff rosters to cover the operating hours of the department. 3. To participate in all areas of laboratory bench work, whilst adhering to standard operating procedures and participating in their regular review and update. 4. To participate in multidisciplinary and flexible working as required. 5. To assist in the recruitment, interview and selection of relevant staff. 6. To communicate patients results and answer enquiries from health care professionals within the hospital and in the community, providing information regarding appropriate investigations required and explanation of results, within departmental guidelines and professional code of conduct, recognising own boundaries. 7. To interpret clinical information and use scientific knowledge to process specimens for appropriate tests, seeking advice from senior staff and clinicians when necessary. 8. Undertake specimen preparation and analysis for a range of sample types. 9. To participate in departmental meetings and contribute to effective communication within the department. 10. To operate and maintain analytical equipment in the department. 11. To evaluate and monitor the accuracy and precision of laboratory investigations using appropriate quality control procedures. 12. To interpret laboratory results and take appropriate actions in line with laboratory policies and procedures for authorising results, adding approved predefined clinically relevant comments, referring results for an expert opinion and clinical interpretation. 13. To check reports for further action by the Clinicians, and to authorise reports as delegated within HSL departmental policy. 14. To assist in the evaluation of new equipment and advise the head of service, senior scientific colleagues on the need for new equipment and maintenance of existing equipment. 15. To ensure that the department meets all the standards required by CPA/UKAS and to participate in the regular review of all the procedures performed in the laboratory including the establishment and monitoring of effective internal and external Quality Control and Quality Assurance schemes. 16. To provide leadership, motivation and support staff within the department. 17. To handle, use and dispose of blood, urine, faeces other body tissue and hazardous chemicals in a safe manner 18. To carry out advanced equipment and method troubleshooting, advise Night Shift Manager and/or Head of Departments of situations requiring further action, work with Service Engineers on fault resolution. 19. To act as the link between Night Service Manager and night shift staffs. 20. To liaise with appropriate Heads of Department (UCLH/TDL) in order to ensure that the highest levels of service are maintained. 21. To be fully familiar with the laboratory IT system, pre/post and automated analytical equipment, and its appropriate utilisation in the provision of the service.
