The Opportunity:
The Veterinary Clinical Laboratory at Easter Bush Pathology, part of the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, is seeking a skilled Clinical Laboratory Manager to lead a team of five technical staff and work collaboratively with eight veterinary clinical pathologists.
The post holder will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Veterinary Clinical Laboratory. Key responsibilities include resource management, Health and Safety compliance, staff coordination, and quality assurance. The role also involves supporting the development of laboratory services and the implementation of new diagnostic tests.
The laboratory provides essential diagnostic services to all clinical hospitals within the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies — including the Small Animal, Large Animal, and Equine Hospitals — and also processes samples from external veterinary practices and research groups.
The successful candidate will join a supportive and collaborative team in a state-of-the-art facility, ideally located with excellent bus routes and commuter links at the foot of the picturesque Pentland Hills. The post includes access to a range of University of Edinburgh staff benefits.
This role is open-ended (permanent) and full-time (35 hours per week).
The salary for this post is at Grade UE07: £40,497 to £48,149 per annum.
Your skills and attributes for success:
Relevant experience in laboratory management, including overseeing daily operations, supervising staff, and managing resources within a laboratory environment.
Strong expertise in Health and Safety and Quality Management Systems, with a proven track record of maintaining regulatory compliance and supporting internal/external audits.
Excellent leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate, train, and develop staff while fostering a collaborative and high-performing work culture.
Outstanding organisational and problem-solving abilities, with experience managing multiple priorities, optimising workflows, and supporting service development.
Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with technical staff, academic colleagues, clinicians, and external clients.
