Our Culture: People Before Process, Leadership with Purpose
At Colchester City Council, leadership is about more than decision-making; it about lifting others, building trust, and making an impact that lasts. We're proud of our people-first, coaching-led culture where collaboration, learning, and shared purpose underpin everything we do.
You'll join a service where:
Mentoring and support are part of the everyday culture, and you'll help deliver it.
Your expertise is valued, your input shapes direction, and your leadership makes a difference.
Integrity, collaboration, and wellbeing matter just as much as technical excellence.
You'll be part of a connected, supportive team with shared goals and mutual respect.
We believe that when our leaders thrive, our teams and our city thrive too.
Your Role: Lead, Support, and Set the Standard
This is a critical role in our service, sitting just beneath the Building Control Manager. As Building Control Team Leader / Principal Inspector, you'll handle the most complex cases, provide day-to-day support to inspectors, and help shape how we deliver a modern, responsive service.
In this role, you will:
Take the lead on more complex and high-risk Building Control cases across the city.
Act as a senior technical reference point for your colleagues, offering daily guidance, mentoring, and support.
Work collaboratively with developers, architects, and internal stakeholders to drive innovation, safety, and quality.
Champion a consistent, high-performing team culture where learning and accountability go hand in hand.
Support the Manager in the development of team practices, standards, and strategy.
This is your chance to make a real impact, using your experience not only to solve problems but to empower others.
What We're Looking For
We're seeking a qualified, experienced Registered Building Inspector (RBI) at Class 2D or above, who brings:
Significant experience with Building Control.
Sound technical judgement and the ability to guide others confidently.
A natural mentoring style of someone who leads through support, not hierarchy.
Strong communication and collaboration skills, able to build trust with colleagues and external partners alike.
A positive, calm, and solutions-focused mindset.
A genuine desire to support both people and progress.
Why Join Us?
You'll be part of a progressive, supportive team that values integrity, innovation, and leadership at every level. We offer:
Autonomy & Professional Respect to work independently on complex matters, with the full backing of your manager and peers.
Flexibility & Balance - blend site, remote, and office working; part-time and flexible hours available.
Growth & Development including CPD, leadership training, mentoring opportunities, and routes into strategic roles.
A culture that works with you and where people are empowered, wellbeing is prioritised, and shared purpose drives everything.
