Applications are invited for the post of Senior Clinical Fellow in Cardiology, for a 12-month fixed term contract. This is a new post and an exciting opportunity within an area with high clinical demand. It is ideal for trainees requiring a period of Cardiology exposure before commencing a full training program, or for those desiring more advanced Cardiology experience in a highly reputed and nationally recognised department.
The successful applicant is expected to work as a member of the clinical team under the guidance and supervision of senior Cardiologist working in partnership with other members of the clinical and multi-disciplinary team, and under consultant supervision and guidance.
They will be based on the acute hospital site but will be part of a wider team supporting the care of our patients in the community both in intermediate care beds and with primary care colleagues.
They will be expected to undertake a range of clinical duties including the daily clinical assessment, diagnosis and treatment of inpatients, providing immediate care to deteriorating patients including initial resuscitation where appropriate, appropriate referrals to other relevant specialist teams where indicated, and supporting safe discharge and follow up. They will be expected to follow local and national guidance and to contribute to these.
The Directorate of Cardiology provides a comprehensive service for inpatients, elective care and outpatients.
Royal Blackburn Hospital is a modern PFI facility with all non-invasive cardiology services and with two dedicated cardiac catheter laboratories. We serve a population of 550,000 across East Lancashire covering both Burnley and Blackburn. Services from both towns were centralised on the Royal Blackburn site in November 2007, with only outpatient clinics continuing at Burnley General Hospital. Diagnostic angiography and pacing (including ICD and Biventricular Devices) is performed in our catheter laboratory, with cardiac surgery being performed at the Lancashire Cardiac Centre (LCC) in Blackpool. The second catheter lab and the new day case unit became operational in February 2010, with on-site PCI commencing on 24th February 2010. There has been a tremendous expansion and development of the cardiac services with improved access to revascularisation and better acute cardiac care.

2. General Cardiology clinics
3. Ward round and support to junior doctors
4. Teaching, audit and research as appropriate
