The Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Graduate Environmental Health Officer to join the Public Protection Team at Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council.

Greater Manchester’s public protection teams have secured continued funding to continue to build and develop Greater Manchester Business Compliance Support (follow this link for further details about this service: www.gmbcs.co.uk). Its aim is to help businesses comply and thrive and will focus on the key regulatory areas of environmental health, trading standards and licensing. You will work alongside nine other new officers to provide support and guidance to businesses across Greater Manchester.

Your role will involve proactively contacting and providing a signposting service for new and existing businesses to help them navigate their compliance issues and questions.

During the course of this 18-month fixed-term contract, we will provide you with the opportunity to work alongside our experienced environmental health officers to collect the evidence and experience you need to complete your environmental health portfolio and achieve your environmental health practitioner (EHP) qualification. With a clear focus on food within the regulatory area of environmental health, we will aim for you to provide a range of free services and support to businesses. You will be given the freedom to identify, create and deliver your own mini projects to help solve business compliance problems in your local authority. With your hard work, we will continue to provide business compliance support service that works for Greater Manchester businesses.

About You

The ideal candidate will be passionate and excited about joining and continuing to shape our service and enthusiastic about keeping the public safe by helping businesses comply. An environmental health graduate or postgraduate, you will be willing to bring and implement fresh ideas to the service and work alongside our business compliance trainee apprentices.

While there will be a focus on food competencies for the duration of the fixed-term-contract, candidates will also have the opportunity to gain experience and meet competencies in other areas required to gain Environmental Health Practitioner status.

You will be open to meeting people from a range of different backgrounds and visiting them in their businesses as well as speaking to them over the phone. You will therefore be expected to have good communication skills and an excellent telephone manner, with an eagerness to learn and develop on an individual and team basis.

More information about the criteria for candidates can be found in the job description/role profile.
