We are seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable individual to join our Board on a freelance basis. As an Advisory Board Member, you will play a crucial role in guiding the strategic direction of our organisation, ensuring that we fulfil our mission and serve our community effectively. This position requires a commitment to governance, compliance, and collaboration with fellow board members and the senior team.
Job Description:
Members must work together to carry out their core functions:
1. Ensuring there is clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
2. Holding senior managers and executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the performance management of staff
3. Overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure money is spent appropriately
4. Ensuring the voice of stakeholders is heard.
Members must ensure that the Advisory Body complies with all legal and statutory requirements. They should seek professional advice as appropriate.
Advisory Board strategic responsibilities
The Advisory Board’s role is strategic. To fulfil this role, they should work closely with SWRAC senior staff who are responsible for the operational management of the organisation.
As such, Advisory Board Members are responsible for:
- Determining the mission, values and long-term ambitious vision for the organisation
- Deciding the principles that guide the organisation and approving key policies
- Working with senior leaders to develop a strategy for achieving the vision
- Ensuring that all students have access to a broad and balanced curriculum to ensure that they are well prepared for the next stage of their work or education, and general adult life
- Setting SWRAC’s budget and ensuring it is managed effectively, together with premises and other resources
- Agreeing on the staffing structure and keeping it under review to ensure it supports the delivery of the strategy
- Ensuring robust risk management procedures are in place and that risk control measures are appropriate and effective
- Ensuring that parents, students, staff and the wider community are involved, consulted and informed as appropriate.
Monitoring and evaluating performance
Members must monitor the priorities that have been set to ensure progress is being made by:
- Measuring progress towards the strategic objectives
- Ensuring the required policies and procedures are in place and that SWRAC is operating effectively in line with these policies
- Evaluating relevant data and feedback is provided by senior leaders
- Ensure that appropriate external reporting is undertaken on all aspects of SWRAC performance
- Asking challenging questions of senior leaders in order to hold them to account for standards, financial probity and compliance with agreed policies
- Visiting SWRAC delivery sites to monitor implementation of the strategy and reporting back to the board as appropriate
- Undertaking the role of link board member for specific aspects and activities
- Ensuring that there are policies and procedures in place to deal with complaints effectively.
When required, governors are expected to serve on panels to:
- Make appointments with the organisation
- Appraise senior leaders and make pay recommendations
- Hear staff grievances and disciplinary matters
- Review decisions to exclude students
- Deal with formal complaints
- Any other activity agreed upon at the Advisory Board.
Contribution to the Advisory Board
Members must ensure that they are making a positive and meaningful contribution to the Advisory Board by:
- Undertake all required ongoing training, which should be recorded
- Attending meetings, reading papers and preparing questions for senior leaders in advance
- Establishing and maintaining professional relationships with senior leaders and staff, and colleagues on the board
- Developing an understanding of courses and delivery aspects, including visiting operational centres.
