Anaesthetic Devices Assistant, Band 2

Fixed-Term: 6 months

We are excited to announce the creation of this new role at Chelsea and Westminster NHS Hospital!

We are looking for a new colleague to join our Anaesthetic Practitioner Team for this 6-month fixed-term role.

This role has been created mainly to help implement an innovation project to reduce the environmental impact of our department.

It would particularly suit:
• Those who wish to gain some healthcare/theatre experience on their CV, to then progress on further
• Colleagues who already work at Chelsea and would like to undertake a 12-month secondment to the Anaesthetic Practitioner team

Anaesthetic Practitioner Team consists of:

Band 7-Lead Anaesthetic Practitioner

Line manager to the anaesthetic team.

Band 6-Senior Anaesthetic Practitioner

Staff with additional clinical and leadership skills who undertake extra tasks on behalf of the Band 7 and provide extra support to the rest of the team.

Band 5-Anaesthetic Practitioner

Registered healthcare professional (Nurse or Operating Department Practitioner) who work alongside the Anaesthetists (Doctors who have specialised in Anaesthesia) to care for patients undergoing procedures , or patients requiring emergency life-saving treatment outside of Theatres.

Band 2-Anaesthetic Devices Assistant

Highly motivated individual who will undertake specialist training to ensure the anaesthetic team have the devices required to provide outstanding care for patients.

You will mainly be working behind the scenes to ensure that devices used by the Anaesthetic Practitioner Team are clean and available. There is no requirement to have any direct face-to-face interaction with patients.

- Be a key player in the rollout of innovative new UV boxes in Theatres.

- Undertake critical learning (online and face-to-face) in required topics, including moving and handling, basic life support and safe use of high-risk equipment.

- Collect pre-cleaned devices from Theatres and undertake two-stage decontamination of these

- Document decontamination has occurred

- Return clean devices to appropriate area

- Roam the fourteen areas, across three floors, where there will be devices waiting for you to decontaminate

- Respond to alerts from colleagues to the need for rapid decontamination

- Ensure that all devices are decontaminated at the end of the shift, handing over to clinical staff if this hasn’t been done

- Ensure a good communication channel with line manager (Lead Anaesthetic Practitioner), feeding back about the ups and downs of the role

- Escalate any concerns, issues or faults appropriately

- Maintain good professional relationship with the team

- Respond to work emails in a timely manner

- Adhere to the Trust PROUD values

- Be accountable for your actions and inactions

Technical:

· Fully understand role in relation to Trust UV box SOP

· Receive training required for the role

· Maintain competence in donning and doffing (putting on and taking off) personal protective equipment (PPE)

· Maintain competence in undertaking effective hand washing

· Undertake the ‘Disinfecting’ stage of the reusable item workflow

· Undertake the ‘Treatment’ stage of the reusable item workflow

· Maintain competence in the use of UV-C treatment cabinets and ability to perform basic troubleshooting

· Educate clinical colleagues on the use of the UV-C treatment cabinets

Administrative:

· Gain competence and confidence in using the Trust IT systems

· Ensure clear and accurate completion of legal documentation, via IT systems

· Ensure that clear and accurate completion of legal documentation continues in the event of IT downtime

· Operate the Trust phone provided to conduct work-related communications only and ensure this does not leave the hospital

· Log in to the Anaesthetic Devices Assistant bleep on the work phone

· Attend work meetings, as required

· Maintain 100% compliance with mandatory training

Professional:

· Prioritise workload to meet deadlines

· Read and respond to work-related emails in a timely manner

· Ensure compliance with Uniform Policy and ensure you have a welcoming demeanour, especially when public-facing

· Actively seek out regular one to ones throughout the year with line manager

· Ensure that incidents are managed and reported effectively and in a timely manner

· Ensure good communication skills are utilised and maintained

· Be accountable for your actions and inactions

· Actively participate in team meetings

· Maintain professional standards and sensibilities when acting outside your normal scope of practice in extreme scenarios, ie. Major incidents or pandemics

General:

· Be receptive to change

· Understand how stress affects you and recognise when it is

· Have a sound support network to help endure sometimes difficult, traumatic and emotive environments and situations

· Support colleagues to improve their mental well-being and resilience
