A Vacancy at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust.
This is an exciting opportunity for a speciality registrar to work 50% in the OOPE speciality of Research and approximately 50% engaged in middle grade clinical shifts in the Emergency Department at Bleep Holder Level.
This role will support the post holder to extend their emergency medicine clinical knowledge, to have allocated time to undertake training and deliver a specific project related to their research. This post will also support the holder to extend their higher specialist training by a further year to prepare them for the demands of being an ED Consultant
The post holder will split their time approximately 50:50 between research and middle grade clinical shifts in the Emergency Department at bleep-holder level. The majority of work in research will be during weekday daytimes,. It is however envisaged that clinical ED shifts will tend to fall at weekends or out of hours. However, no greater than a one in 3 weekend frequency will be expected.
The ED has 24/7 middle grade clinical cover & extended Consultant cover to 8am-2am 7 days per week. Post-holders in this grade will participate in the Tier 4 rota at "bleep-holding level". Duties within the Emergency Department will cover the whole range of clinical responsibility for both those patients seen in the Emergency Department and inpatients on our observation ward.
Clinical duties will include taking a lead role in the management of acutely ill or traumatised patients. The qualities of leadership required as head of an emergency team are stressed and it is anticipated that these qualities will be gradually learned through the process of supervision of more junior doctors and involvement in their education - both formal and informal.
The post holder will be expected to prioritise and time-manage effectively according to the activity of the department and to utilise appropriately the available senior staff for advice.
As a trusted organisation at the heart of our communities, we recognise the important role we can play in supporting the public, patients, our own people and local partners in achieving the best of health for the local population and the communities in which they live by providing Exceptional Care Together
Our fundamental Values of Compassion, Openness and Excellence underpin how we intend to work as a Trust and the associated behaviours are becoming embedded in all aspects of how we work.
In return we will offer:
• Development opportunities, including both professional and leadership development
• On-going support through every step of the way from recruitment to when you join our team and beyond.
• A variety of other staff benefits including employee assistance programme, discounted gym membership, onsite fitness classes, car schemes
Key Facts about our Trust:
• We see on average 4810 OP appointments per day.
• We are the 4th busiest Trauma & Orthopaedic outpatients department in England – an average of 2077 per week.
• An average of 1115 patients are seen in A&Es across our network every day – 3rd largest in the country.
• Our hospitals admit an average of 195 emergency patients daily.
• Last year we undertook almost 33,700 planned surgical operations in our 57 operating theatres.
• We are one of only 7 Trusts nationally with more than 50 operating theatres.
• We carry out more than 140 elective procedures each working day.
The post holder will be expected to prioritise and time-manage effectively according to the activity of the department and to utilise appropriately the available senior staff for advice.
Education and Training
A Consultant educational supervisor for the period of the appointment will be allocated. The post holder will be expected to complete work place based assessments to allow documentation of their own development and develop a personal learning plan with regular review.
Specific training time within research is a core part of this role.
Recognition of Posts for Postgraduate Training
These posts are not recognised for training but the successful candidate will require the appropriate permissions from their Head of School to take time out from their training programme.
This OOPE will involve working with the UHDB research team for 50% of their working time.
The successful applicants will gain clinical experience across all of these teams, whilst also engaging with the clinical rota when appropriate.
The successful applicant is expected to lead on a Quality Improvement research project within the emergency department. This can be either of the candidate's own design or one suggested by the current ED and research teams. Any such project is likely to require liaison with various stakeholders, including research, primary care and relevant charity and patient groups.
Additionally a proportion of this role will be to improve Medicine and education within the emergency department. This will include updating guidance and Standard Operating Procedures. This will also involve regular teaching sessions for both medical and nursing staff
