Specialty Doctor in Emergency Medicine with option to progress to CESR/Portfolio Pathway
We are looking for doctors to join our well established CESR/Portfolio Pathway rotation at the Royal Derby Hospital
The posts will commence with a fixed term Specialty Doctor contract in Emergency Medicine for 12 months. Subject to satisfactory progress at the end of this first year, successful candidates will have the option to progress to the CESR programme which we would expect to require 3-5 years for completion in most cases. The contract will be reviewed annually and extended on a mutually agreed basis, based on successful completion of required competencies at annual review.
The posts are intended to offer the clinician access to the support and training required to complete all aspects of the CESR process pending successful progression through the programme. It will guarantee specific secondment-style modules in the CESR programme, to address relevant educational and competency needs. Secondments offered include Anaesthetics, ITU, Acute Medicine and Paediatric Emergency Medicine.
The contract is for 10 PAs per week (9 DCC and 1 SPA). Some SPA time is pre allocated (see section ‘EDUCATION AND TRAINING’).
The ED has 24/7 middle grade clinical cover and extended Consultant cover from 8am-2am 7 days per week. Post-holders in this grade will participate in the middle grade rota. Duties within the Emergency Department will cover the whole range of clinical responsibility for both those patients seen in the Emergency Department and inpatients on our observation ward.
Although the successful applicant may not initially have the competencies to manage the ED overnight, it is expected that during the post they will develop to take on this role.
Clinical duties will include taking a lead role in the management of acutely ill and trauma patients. The qualities of leadership required as head of an emergency team are stressed and it is anticipated that these qualities will be gradually learned through the process of supervision of more junior doctors and involvement in their education, both formal and informal.
The post holder will be expected to prioritise and time-manage effectively according to the activity of the department and to utilise appropriately the available senior staff for advice.
Education is an important part of the role. The post holder will be fully involved in supporting the training of all levels of staff: medical; nursing; para-medical.
