This is an exciting opportunity to work in the Maritime and Aviation Appraisal and Modelling (MavAM) team. MAvAM plays a pivotal role in providing robust and influential modelling and appraisal outputs to shape aviation and maritime policy and support wider transport policy.

AMBA (Aviation, Maritime and Borders Analysis) is a multi-disciplinary analytical division with around 50 high-performing team members who provide expertise on modelling, economic analysis, statistical analysis, operation research, social research and advice on appraisal and evaluation to shape strategic thinking and policy development.

Team members work flexibly across team boundaries, supporting each other to deliver against the priorities for the Aviation, Maritime and Security Group. Roles in AMBA provide the opportunity to work closely alongside other analytical colleagues and internal and external industry partners. AMBA is at the heart of some of DfT’s priority policy areas, including decarbonisation and airport expansion.

This role leading on forecasting and understanding surface access to the UK’s airports which is crucial in feeding into the wider aviation modelling and analytical programme. This role will also lead on the liaison with a range of external stakeholders and other modelling teams within DfT to ensure that the department has an accurate evidence base for decision making.

Your Role Responsibilities include (but not limited to):

  • The postholder will take on the exciting responsibility of managing and being responsible for surface access modelling to airports. This will include working on updating and streamlining a number of models including the National Airport Accessibility Model (NAAM2) as well as Son of South East Regional Air Services model (SoSERAS) and Son of South East Regional Air Services Employee model (SoSERASe), which have been used to look at surface access for both Gatwick and Heathrow.
  • You will be in charge of the scoping exercise and feed into decisions on how to proceed, manage the work (possibly including procuring and managing external contractors) to complete updates to NAAM2 and SoSERAS/ SoSERASe.
  • You will also lead on producing visualisations and graphics on the outputs of this work to ensure that a wide audience can engage with the analysis. There is the need to collaborate closely with other analytical and policy colleagues to ensure that there is the right evidence is available to support decisions and policy making.
