Your new company


Working within an Estates Services team, the purpose of the Joiner role is to carry out a wide range of planned and unplanned tasks, ensuring the safe, effective and economical installation and maintenance of the Trust's engineering systems and physical assets.
The jobholder will install, maintain, service, fault find, diagnose, repair and reinstate into service a range of building elements, fixtures and fittings. The jobholder will be employed to work on equipment appropriate to their core specialist skills.


The jobholder will be suitably trained to acquire elements of other trade skills with the intention of reaching levels of flexibility and competence to enable them to perform specific skill elements where appropriate.


Your new role

  • Carry out a wide range of planned and reactive building maintenance and installation tasks in a safe, effective and economical manner.
  • Carry out unplanned maintenance tasks which may include diagnosing and repairing faults for items such as, but not limited to:
  • Locking mechanisms for doors
  • Ironmongery for doors (handles, hinges, door closures, emergency release systems)
  • Provide safe access to potential asbestos-contaminated areas (above ceiling voids)


3. Undertake planned maintenance checks for items such as, but not limited to:

  • Building fabric and external ground condition surveys
  • Fire compartment breaks, screens and doors
  • Inspection of anti-ligature systems (e.g. windows, furniture, blinds, bedrails and bathroom fittings)




4. Install and/or assemble items such as, but not limited to:

  • Office furniture and accessories (Desks, notice boards, etc.)
  • Washroom accessories (Mirrors, grab rails, soap dispensers, etc.)
  • Wall impact protection/ hygiene cladding (corridors, clean rooms / showers)




5. Respond to urgent reactive maintenance jobs such as, but not limited to:

  • Temporary repairs to damaged windows and doors
  • Roof leaks to a variety of roof types/systems and rainwater systems
  • Broken or faulty drug cupboard security locks



6. Perform the role of 'Competent Person' in relation to a range of specialist systems and procedures as defined by the statutory legislation and Best Practice Guidance in work areas such as, but not limited to:

  • Workshop Machinery
  • Operation of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs)



7. Carry a Trust communication device e.g. pager/mobile phone, radio, tablet, etc.
8. Communicate technical issues to work colleagues and explain technical issues to other staff and patients.
9. Use equipment manuals to diagnose faults and maintain equipment.
10. Use drawings and manuals to diagnose faults and maintain plant and equipment.
11. Use appropriate personal protective equipment to carry out their duties.
12. Carry out minor mechanical and electrical repairs and safety checks.
13. Assist with the release of trapped passengers from lifts.
14. Undertake condition surveys and carry out acceptance testing of new equipment and building installations.
15. Work across all areas of the Trust, travelling in a Trust-supplied vehicle or his/her own transport.
16. Given the 24/7 nature of health and social care, the post holder will be required to participate in an on-call service (additional remuneration applies).
17. If and when required, the jobholder will be expected to work regular, planned or unplanned overtime or shift work - sometimes at short notice (additional remuneration applies).

18. The jobholder must comply with all relevant legislation, guidance and Trust Procedures, Policies and Codes of Practice and propose changes where necessary.

What you'll need to succeed


- Working knowledge and experience of carrying out joinery and building maintenance repairs.
- Working knowledge and experience in the use of woodworking machinery and hand / power tools.- Working knowledge and experience of undertaking tasks for other engineering trade groups.

  • Must have completed a formal apprenticeship as a carpenter/joiner.
  • In addition to his/her apprenticeship, the applicant must hold a relevant qualification at least NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent), together with a minimum of 3 years post-apprenticeship experience (see above for definition of Experience*).
  • Hold 'Competent Person' certified training in the following work areas:
  • Workshop Machinery
  • Operation of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs)


- Hold a current full driving licence which is valid for use in the UK and have access to a car on appointment. - These criteria will be waived in the case of applicants whose disability prohibits driving but who have access to a form of transport approved by the Organisation which will permit them to carry out the duties of the post.

  • Excellent communication skills to meet the needs of the post in full.
  • Ability to work accurately and produce work of a high standard under pressure and to strict deadlines.
