Summary
The Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust have an exciting opportunity for a Paediatric Consultant to come and join our dynamic and enthusiastic team at GWH! This role is a locum Consultant post for 12 months.
This is a part time 8PA position but candidates wishing to be considered to be part time are encouraged to apply.
This is a fixed term maternity cover role within the Paediatric team, as part of a wider expansion of the consultant workforce to allow dedicated separate Paediatric service provision. The appointed candidate(s) will join an existing team of senior medical staff including Consultants.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical Duties:
• Participation in out of hours consultant cover for paediatrics on a rota (Approximately 1:14 weekdays, 1:7 weekends, changing to 1:8 for weekday on calls and weekends from November 2025). On-call responsibilities will involve multidisciplinary team working across paediatric services
• Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in your charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care (with secretarial support)
• There is no on-site PICU but patients are stabilised in the ED or on the adult ICU whilst awaiting retrieval with support from the anaesthetic department. Where the patient is a critically unwell baby (as a guide, under 3 months of age), the neonatal team will help provide critical care skills and support for stabilisation prior to retrieval by the regional Paediatric Intensive Care WATCh team.
• Undertaking ward rounds around the childrens ward daily
• All consultants are willing to support new members of the team and a mentor within the department will be allocated.
• Multidisciplinary team working is key component of the working within the Trust and involves regular MDT discussions with colleagues including our nursing and AHP teams.
• Development of sub specialty interests that fit in with Division needs and the strategic direction of the Trust.
• Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties are required, and for contributing to undergraduate and post-graduate and continuing medical education activity.
• Provision of cover for Consultant colleagues’ periods of leave in accordance with arrangements agreed within Trust policy.
• Participation in clinical audit and in continuing medical education.
• Conducting suitable duties in cases of emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
• The post holder will participate in an out of hours consultant rota, detailed within the job plan section
• GP advice and guidance and GP referral triage roughly 2-3 times per month.
• PAU shifts split each week Mon-Fri between two consultants so alternating 2/3 days each cycle.
• General Paediatric clinics and sub-speciality clinics if applicable
• Safeguarding – attending strategy meetings, performing CP medicals and writing reports with support from named lead for safeguarding and safeguarding nursing team
