Summary
KEY DUTIES Act as an advocate for patients and relatives at all times. Independently perform advanced history taking, physical assessment / examination, request appropriate investigations, and formulate an appropriate management plan. Acknowledge limitations in knowledge and skills and refer to senior colleagues when scope of practice is exceeded. Facilitate rapid patient assessment, investigation, diagnosis and treatment to enable timely management of patient flow through the department. Prioritise health problems and ensure urgent cases are seen in a timely manner. Prescribe within local and national guidelines, appropriate to patient needs and within scope of practice. Work with other healthcare professionals both within the department and in the wider setting to ensure appropriate management and follow up / referral of patients Maintain effective communication links with all members of the healthcare team, and other external healthcare professionals Communicate sensitively and professionally with patients / carers to ensure they are fully informed to consent to treatment, and are involved in their treatment plans, and alternative methods of communicating are explored to facilitate communication to overcome different levels of understanding / cultural differences. Work within agreed Departmental and national policies, procedures & guidelines. Maintain clinical competency through attending regular mandatory training sessions. Show evidence of on-going continued professional development CLINICAL & PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES Will include but not be limited to: Performing clinical examination of all body systems, E.g. chest, abdomen, gynaecological, dermatological, cardiovascular, neurological, orthopaedic, ENT etc. Venepuncture Interpretation of ECGs Bladder catheterisation Applying bandages, splints, dressings, plaster Interpretation of x-rays (injuries) Managing minor head injuries Managing burns and wounds Suturing Removal of foreign bodies from eyes and ears. TEACHING & TRAINING RESPONSIBILITIES Take responsibility for own learning. Actively promote the workplace as a learning environment encouraging everyone to learn from each other. Contribute to the development / revision of clinical pathways. Demonstrate responsibility for personal professional development by using a personal development plan and professional portfolio. Attend update courses to maintain current skills Attend new courses that will benefit the individual from a personal development perspective and enable that individual to bring new knowledge / skills into the department. LINE MANAGEMENT/SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Prioritise, organise and manage own workload to maintain & promote quality & safety and ensure effective time management strategies are employed within the culture of the team. Demonstrate effective leadership at all times. Work as an effective & responsible team member; support others to contribute to the efficient management of the department. Delegate clearly and responsibly, adopting principles of safe practice and assessment of competence. Contribute to the development of our policies, procedures, pathways and guidelines. To assist in ensuring high standards of patient care are met at all times, and that waiting time targets are met. To ensure economical usage of supplies in the department To attend regular staff meetings and take an active role in meetings. To propose service changes and contribute to implementation of any changes introduced.
