This fellowship is an Advanced Surgical Training Fellowship. It is suitable for a post-Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) surgeon with FRCS (Trauma & Orthopaedics) or equivalent for overseas applicants, wishing to gain further experience in planned and traumatic shoulder and elbow surgery. For applicants in training, applications must be accompanied by the written approval of the candidate’s Postgraduate Dean and Director of Training.
Candidates will be expected to retain their own training number and will need to apply for unpaid leave for out of programme training from their current deanery. Applications are invited from individuals who have attained their CCT in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery.
The applicant would be expected to have had previous experience in upper limb surgery. Full GMC registration and licence to practice in the UK is required. The post holder would also be expected to participate in the on-call rota as required.
This post is for 12 month period starting in February 2026
The successful candidate will be working with two Upper Limb Consultants – Mr Brookes-Fazakerley and Mr Robinson.
The Fellow will assist in fracture clinics and elective orthopaedic clinics and, if appropriate, will have “supervised” solo new and follow up clinics. When service provision demands a degree of upper limb fracture and elective clinic cross-cover may be required.
The Fellow will be in trauma and elective theatre approximately 4-5 sessions per week and, depending on their experience, they will be performing procedures in supervised and also, if appropriate, on tandem theatre lists to prepare for independent practice. This will increase as the Fellow’s experience and operative independence increases. Exposure to general trauma including hip fracture management will also be provided. There is flexibility within the job plan for exposure general trauma along with hand & wrist surgery.
1 session per week is allocated for clinically based research and there will be a Consultant appointed to supervise and facilitate this.
