Summary

Job Description Title: Sister/Charge Nurse Grade: Band 6 Location: Interventional Radiology Professionally Accountable: Matron Reports to:Radiology Unit Manager ROLE SUMMARY: To be responsible, with the support of the manager, for the day to day, smooth running of the Interventional room/s. The post holder will work initially within the radiology department at Worcestershire Royal Hospital. It is anticipated that the service will extend to include travel by the post holder to other sites including the Alexandra Hospital, Redditch on a rotational basis to meet the requirements of the service. The post holder will also be expected to support a 24/7 service when this is developed. The post holder will ensure the provision of effective, efficient and appropriate high quality patient care within the Interventional Radiology Department, act as patient advocate throughout the Interventional Radiology process and promote evidence based practice and act as an accountable role model and clinical expert. The post holder will work closely with multi-disciplinary team members in monitoring and maintaining excellent clinical standards of nursing practice and staff development. As this is a new role, training and support will be an important part of the role. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Professional/Clinical Leadership Where applicable, the post holder will take charge of the team/ward/department on a regular basis. The post holder is expected to carry out all relevant and specialised forms of care without direct supervision and is required to demonstrate procedures, supervise registered and/or unregistered staff and student nurses whilst maintaining a safe working environment. The post holder will be flexible in the approach to the clinical area and provide cover for interventional radiology lists at all sites. Implement a nursing plan for an assigned group of patients, indicating assessment and re-assessment formulated for individual care plans. The post holder, following training will be expected to be confident in assessing all patients for any invasive radiological procedure; being able to plan each patients care, safely monitor throughout, sedate as required, recover and discharge the patient. Assist as required with a wide range of invasive procedures including; abdominal and aortic stenting, arterial intervention and percutaneous work. Many patients are acutely unwell requiring emergency procedures so the post holder must be confident in managing these patients while their condition is unstable in the isolated environment of Radiology with support from the Consultant Radiologist The post holder will be required to report and document relevant information, using their initiative and communication skills to liaise with the Radiology team and other professionals. They must be confident and competent to react to any concerns or circumstances immediately. The post holder will be expected to scrub alongside the Consultant Radiologist in the theatre environment for interventional radiological procedures. Being able to assist the Consultants and communicate any concerns or issues during complex procedures. The post holder will be able to monitor the sedated patient and give IV medication as prescribed by the Consultant Radiologist within the scope of the radiology sedation policy. Recognise changes in the patients observations and act accordingly. Ensure that nursing documentation is maintained to NMC standards (including electronic records). Ensure the privacy, dignity and confidentiality of patients/clients, relatives and colleagues are respected at all times The post holder will participate in a 24/7 on call rota for emergency procedures, once established. The post holder is expected to be able to use their initiative while in this busy environment and be prepared to continually improve their practice, assisting with the introduction and implementation of procedures protocols and other documentation. The post holder will be required to wear a lead coat for long periods while in the interventional rooms. Provide highly specialised advice concerning care to staff, patients and relatives. Staff Development Develop own knowledge and skills and contribute to the development of others. To act as a mentor for junior staff, to participate in teaching for all learners in accordance with their objectives, working closely with the Clinical Facilitators. To provide support and clinical induction programme to the interventional room/s. To provide specialist advice to nurses on the vascular ward and to other external agencies. Maintain a wide knowledge of current practice and issues within the speciality by reading relevant journals and attending study days where appropriate. Promoting the implementation and teaching of research based practice. To attend mandatory training days. To develop appropriate patient education literature in accordance with Trust Policies. Clinical Governance Promote best practice in health, safety and security. Contribute to quality improvement. Promote peoples equality, diversity and rights. Participate in personal and departmental clinical audit. To ensure that nursing procedures are implemented and maintained in accordance with the policies of the Trust. Management To actively promote the development of evidence based practice. To be positive about Interventional Radiology to promote retention of staff To ensure that all accidents, incidents and complaints are reported and to assist in the investigation of them. To ensure safe and efficient staffing levels by assisting in the appropriate planning of off-duty Regularly take charge of the team/clinical area, utilising resources effectively To ensure effective mentorship, preceptorship and clinical supervision for staff within the interventional room/s. Promote effective communication with ward/departmental staff and multidisciplinary teams. To manage effectively the day to day running of the interventional room/s with support of the manager. To assist the directorate with service development. Develop policies guidelines and procedures in line with best practice. To provide clear and structured reports on activity for the directorate team. To liaise closely with the Radiologists and with other wards and departments as necessary. To provide, by example, an effective leadership function. Maintain accurate records at all times, ensuring appropriate reporting mechanisms are used. Be conversant with Trust and other policies, procedures and mechanisms in place. To work in accordance with government initiatives to ensure targets set are achieved. 5. Professional To maintain a professional attitude at all times developing the role of the nurse in the best interest of the patient and profession in accordance with Nursing & Midwifery Council. To be aware of personal and professional development. To attend courses and conferences as recommended and approved by the manager. To be conversant and comply with the Trust policies and regulations and attend mandatory lectures as instructed. Participate in research projects where appropriate, report findings within a multidisciplinary framework. Implement research where appropriate. 6. Personnel To assist in the maintenance of day to day discipline within the department. To inform the manager of staff failing to meet the required standard of performance, and taking appropriate action where required.
