The Clinical Scientist position is in the Solid Organ
Transplantation Group located in the Anthony Nolan Histocompatibility
Laboratory, which is responsible for all aspects of tissue typing relating to the
renal, liver and islet cell/pancreas transplant programmes of the Royal Free.
The Clinical Scientist must be able to type (HLA), screen and identify HLA
antibodies on the Luminex platform, and perform crossmatches with a flow
cytometer to a very high standard. Full participation (1:6) in a 24/7 on call
tissue typing rota is mandatory. Willingness and ability to actively participate
in relevant research and development, audits of activity, teaching and training
in this area is essential.


1. Facilitating the selection of transplant recipients and donors by performing HLA typing.
2. Identifying unacceptable donor HLA types which could contribute to acute organ rejection in transplant recipients, by screening for HLA antibodies.
3. A fully comprehensive 24/7 on-call tissue typing service.
4. Monitoring transplant recipients for the development donor specific antibodies to HLA mismatches (HLA DSAs) which are prognostic of organ rejection.
5. Facilitating the Royal Free live donor transplant programme, by performing HLA typing, screening for HLA antibodies, virtual and bench crossmatch tests, as well as advising clinicians and specialist nurses on live donor selection.
6. Participating and actively contributing to audits, multidisciplinary team meetings, research and development, and teaching.
7. Fulfilling to a high standard all relevant national and European quality assurance, accreditation and professional development schemes.
8. Facilitating transplantation of the best matched organs into the most appropriate patients in an equitable fashion.
9. Managing the registration status of renal and islet recipients on national transplant database.
