What's involved with this role:

Job Title: Debt Recovery Officer

Ref: Brent 5269941

Pay rate: £19.46 per hour PAYE



A Basic DBS will be required for this role.

This role is subject to hybrid working arrangements, you will be required to work from the office one day per week.



The role:

We are seeking an experienced and competent Debt Recovery Officer to drive the recovery and enforcement of vital council debts, including Council Tax, Parking and Road Traffic, Housing Benefit Overpayments, Adult Social Care, Sundry Debt and any debt recovery portfolio managed within the Council.

Experience of working with one or more of the following Revenues systems: Abacus - Adult Social Care or NEC (Northgate) Revenues – Council Tax Recovery is essential for this role.



Key responsibilities:

Efficiently and objectively recover all debts, prioritising the Council’s financial interests across all revenue and debt streams
Ensure all debt collection complies with current legislation, case law, and local policies
Provide advice and support for enquiries related to debt collection, service requests, complaints, subject access requests, freedom of information, and other complex casework as required



What the client is looking for:

Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Strong numerical, analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities
Knowledge of customer service in diverse environments and debt recovery via county/magistrates’ courts
Experience in customer advice, enquiries, complaints, negotiation, and influencing in challenging settings
Background in revenues, debt enforcement, and adapting recovery processes to service needs
Skilled in recovery business support, handling challenging customers, and managing conflicting priorities under pressure
Proficient with various IT systems and applications and experience of Abacus - Adult Social Care or NEC (Northgate) Revenues – Council Tax Recovery

Capable of remaining customer-focused while managing distressed or irate customers and resolving complex issues
Able to interpret legislation and procedures and communicate clearly to customers
