The Opportunity:
Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) is looking for an experienced and passionate Specialist Ceramics and Mould making Technician to join our team.
With the support of a Technical Manager, you will have the very exciting opportunity to develop and create a new ceramic facility as part of a new Flexible Makers workshop which will support Ceramics, Mould making and Light Fabrication at ECA. This role will be critical in shaping a new facility, where you will provide expert advice to students from a variety of disciplines, working closely with your other team members. You must be able to work independently and flexibly, supporting academic and student needs.
This part time post (17.5 hours per week) includes the teaching of relevant technical processes and provides introduction, inductions and training to students in relevant techniques including clay preparation, hand building, slip casting, throwing, mould making and kiln firing and overseeing the smooth running of facilities for ceramics.
The post holder will take a lead role in providing world-class services to our students and staff. They are required to assess and develop solutions by anticipating future demand, manage safe working within the technical areas, and ensure that equipment is well maintained and is used safely and efficiently.
Your skills and attributes for success:
Vocational qualifications: HNC/HND or equivalent level qualifications plus experience in relevant technical work.
Specialist knowledge with significant practical experience in a variety of skills and techniques including clay preparation, throwing, hand building, slip casting, model and mould making, and kiln firing techniques within HE and/or the creative industries.
A comprehensive awareness and understanding of Health and Safety practices within an educational environment.
Demonstrable knowledge, interest and experience of working in an Art and / or Design background.
Excellent communication skills with an ability to produce documentation and help material for students and staff.
Ability to work effectively in a team under minimal supervision, and to work with students and staff of a variety of levels of technical ability.
