JOB DESCRIPTION AND PERSON SPECIFICATION 1. JOB DETAILS Job Title: Deputy Named Nurse for Safeguarding Children Reports to: Named Midwife/ Nurse for Safeguarding children Accountable to: Head of Safeguarding Band: 7 Unit/Department: Safeguarding CSU Directorate: Location : SJUH/LGI AfC Job No: 3466(a) 2. JOB PURPOSE The post holder will undertake the role of the Deputy Named Nurse for Safeguarding, acting as a senior Safeguarding Nurse within the Trust with the Named Nurse for Safeguarding providing day to day management of the Children and midwifery safeguarding team and acting as a central point of contact for, health professionals and partner agencies that have safeguarding children and child protection concerns. The post holder will work in partnership with the Head of Safeguarding, Named Nursefor Safeguarding and the other Named Safeguarding Professionals in ensuring that the safeguarding children statutory requirements are met within as of the Children Act 1989/2004. The post holder will demonstrate advance skills and competencies to influence the pathways of care in the safeguarding in children services. They ensure that evidence-based practice is inherent in all aspects of care. The role requires a comprehensive and sound knowledge base of legal literacy of Children Act and family law that interface with the safeguarding children agenda. The post holder will in partnership with the Head of Safeguarding, Named Nurse for Safeguarding, Head of Children / management team lead in the development and delivery of high quality, evidence based services to children and their families identified as having safeguarding concerns. Job summary: To ensure the highest standards of safeguarding practice are delivered to the children and their families in partnership with all members of the internal and external multi-disciplinary team To have responsibility for supervision of staff in relation to the delivery and maintenance of safeguarding children standards across the children department covered by LTHT. Foster and maintain excellent communication links with other external agencies and professionals in relation to safeguarding children. Be responsible for the audit of safeguarding practices within the children setting 3. JOB DIMENSIONS The post holder will work closely with the Leeds Children Hospital, transitional services within the Trust and other services from across the region for all children and young people. To participate in specialist education and training in relation to safeguarding to clinical and non-clinical staff across all teams caring for children and young people. To provide professional and managerial leadership and evidence-based support to all staff caring for children and young people in relation to safeguarding. To be knowledgeable of the NMC code of conduct and to be accountable for practice in accordance with that code, along with the Roles And Competencies For Healthcare Staff (2014) To support the Named Nurse and other Named and Link Professionals in issues relating to safeguarding children. Deputise for the Named Nurse for Safeguarding in their absence through attendance at meetings. Support the Named Nurse for Safeguarding Children where necessary to represent the Trust at Local Safeguarding Children Partnership LSCPs including attending LSCP sub-committees as appropriate. 4. ORGANISATIONAL CHART 5. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED Qualifications Registered Midwife or Nurse. Recognised teaching/assessing qualification First Level Degree Education/ Equivalent academic experience Masters Level Degree Education (desirable) Evidence of commitment to continuing professional development Experience Significant experience at senior level. Extensive knowledge and experience of safeguarding practice and management at a senior level equivalent. Experience of developing and contribution to audit processes and developing and implementing action plans. Experience of standard setting in organisations Significant experience of working in partnership with other external agencies to develop, implement and evaluate policies and strategies, including managing change. Evidence of on-going professional development Delivery of education and training within the clinical area, including innovative learning styles to enhance skills Evidence of successful management of change Skills Possess and demonstrates strong analytical skills, literacy and numeracy. The post holder will have skills in the gathering and evaluation of evidence in order to safeguard vulnerable people. The post holder will disseminate court skills and knowledge, where needed, through accessing Trust legal services and facilities Knowledge: Extensive and specialist knowledge of the Multi-Agency safeguarding children procedures as identified within the West Yorkshire Consortia Procedures Confident with the Children Act 1989 & 2004, and able to confidently advise staff as to the appropriate management of safeguarding issues. Confident with the guidance document Working Together to Safeguard Children ( 2023) Extensive knowledge of clinical governance and risk management. In depth knowledge of latest safeguarding research perspectives and implications for practice in the hospital setting. Advanced understanding of the Data Protection Act (2018) regarding confidentiality and consent in safeguarding situations. Understanding of forensic procedures relating to safeguarding incidents. In depth understanding of quality assurance processes and ability to implement these. Knowledge of relevant legalisation in relation to safeguarding children. Understanding and knowledge of appropriate legislation that relates to safeguarding children and adults how this can be operated within a health care setting.
