Avon and Somerset Constabulary are looking for a Paralegal to join our Operational team to provide support to Lawyers in the team.

Paralegal Level 1: Scale 4 £26,106 - £28,653

Paralegal Level 2: Scale 5 £29,109 - £31,296

Dependent on experience; the role level and salary scale will correspond to the candidates' level of experience. Please look at both job descriptions and specify in your application which level you are applying for.

No specific experience of policing or operational policing law knowledge is required, and all training and guidance will be provided by our friendly and supportive team. We are seeking applicants who are effective communicators and who possess excellent team player skills, with the motivation to support colleagues and make a difference to one of the Force’s key priority areas within this team.


In this role, your main responsibilities will be:

Under supervision, assess evidence and advise officers and police support staff and work with partner agencies in relation to civil applications in the County and Magistrates’ Courts eg Civil Injunctions, Property Closure Orders, Proceeds of Crime Act forfeiture applications, Sexual Harm Prevention Orders, Sexual Risk Orders, Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention and Protection Orders, Dangerous Dogs Act applications
Prepare papers for urgent applications in relation to civil protection orders such as DVPOs
Support the Lawyers in advising officers and police support staff on matters relating to Police (Property) Act 1897 claims, Public Order matters, Firearms Licensing appeals, pre-charge bail applications in the Magistrates Court and other matters falling within the scope of operational policing where legal advice may be required.
Making applications in the Magistrates Courts, subject to the appropriate training and permissions from the Court, in relation to uncontested and/or procedural hearings in the Magistrates Court.
Providing day to day support, including legal research, to the Lawyers and Senior Lawyers.
Responding to general advice queries from across the Force on a wide range of issues reporting to the duty lawyer.

Additional information:

To be eligible to apply for this role you must have a 5 year ‘checkable history’ in the UK – ideally this means that you would have been resident in the UK for the last 5 years.

The role is full time (37 hours per week) working between Monday – Friday. Working hours are flexible and will be discussed with the successful candidate at point of offer.

The successful candidate for this role will have the opportunity to work from home whilst also at a secondary work location, which will be a police premises. The successful applicant will have the option to discuss working arrangements with their line manager. All applicants must reside within the UK.
