To manage the planning, development, and delivery of traffic engineering and transport infrastructure projects across Shropshire. The postholder will ensure that projects are delivered safely on time, within budget, and in line with strategic transport and environmental objectives.
Key Responsibilities:
• Project Management:
Lead on the delivery of a range of traffic engineering projects, including road safety schemes, junction improvements, traffic calming, and pedestrian and cycling infrastructure.
• Design & Technical Oversight:
Oversee the technical development of traffic schemes from feasibility through to implementation. Work closely with in-house teams and external consultants to ensure compliance with design standards and best practice.
• Stakeholder Engagement:
Liaise with internal departments, elected members, the public, and external agencies (e.g. police, National Highways) to develop schemes that meet local needs and statutory requirements.
• Budget & Programme Control:
Manage project budgets and delivery programmes. Ensure projects are effectively planned, risk-assessed, and resourced to deliver maximum value.
• Regulatory Compliance:
Ensure all schemes comply with relevant traffic legislation, safety audits, and environmental assessments. Support the preparation of traffic regulation orders where required.
• Performance Monitoring & Reporting:
Produce regular updates, reports, and evaluations on project progress, expenditure, and outcomes. Identify opportunities for service improvement and innovation.
Person Specification:
Essential:
• Proven experience in traffic engineering or highway project delivery
• Strong knowledge of UK highway design standards, traffic regulations, and safety requirements
• Project management skills with the ability to manage multiple schemes simultaneously
• Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder engagement skills
• Budget management experience and commercial awareness
• Proficiency in relevant software (e.g., AutoCAD, GIS, project management tools)
Desirable:
• Degree or HNC/HND in Civil Engineering, Transport Planning, or related discipline
• Chartered status or working toward professional membership (e.g., CIHT, ICE)
• Experience working in a local authority or public sector environment
• Knowledge of sustainable transport and climate-resilient infrastructure
This role involves travel across Shropshire and may require occasional evening attendance at public meetings or consultations. A valid UK driving licence is desirable.
