About you:

You will ideally come with some experience in private sector housing enforcement, or general enforcement. You will be will to manage a caseload with the assistance of the Principle EHO and EHO, that is appropriate for your role. The ideal candidate would be able to deal with difficult clients in a fair and even handed way. The ideal candidate would have some knowledge of the operation of the Housing Health and Safety Rating System and Part 1 of the Housing Act 2004. You should be able to work comfortably within a team and assist other team members as necessary. You will be happy to carry out lone inspections in the Exeter local government area, subject to dynamic risk assessment.


About the role:

Using discretionary and statutory powers, to work with all sectors of the community and with internal and external partners, to maintain and improve the quality and safety of residential properties, including residential mobile home sites and HMO licensing, for those people who live in, work in or visit the City.

To assist the Principal Environmental Health Officer and Environmental Health Officer in providing a regulatory service and carrying out the Council’s statutory duties

About the team:

The Private Sector Housing Team consists of a Principal EHO, an EHO, 2 Environmental Health Technicians, 2 officers working on grants and a Private Sector Housing Officer. The PSH Team administers and inspects 1500 licensed HMOs, the largest number of any authority in Devon, many of which are student properties. The Team inspects single family dwellings and assesses them under the HHSRS and takes action where necessary, including prosecutions and fines, and is also involved in combatting illegal evictions, overcrowding, and general poor conditions. The Team currently organises a landlord education event twice a year, and in the past has taken place in tenant education events.
