A development opportunity has arisen for the position of Specialist Nurse to work within Ear Nose & Throat at UHL. We are seeking an experienced registered nurse with a passion for ENT, who has a desire to progress to a Clinical Specialist role.

We are looking for a motivated person, willing to develop themselves, becoming an autonomous practitioner. You will have completed Post Graduate study and be willing to undertake the necessary skills and training to support the needs of our ENT patients and their families. You will be required to complete an in-house clinical skills competency package. This is open to individuals as a band 5 development if no ENT experience. A competency package must be completed within a time frame to achieve Band 6.

You will have the opportunity to develop your leadership and clinical skills which will contribute to the development of a nurse-led service.

You will be supported by our highly experienced and passionate ACP and Consultants in the care and management of these patients, you will work towards setting up nurse led clinics, improving services for ENT patients.

You will have a flexible approach to meet needs of the service. Some off hospital site working will be considered as service capacity increases. You will be expected provide an efficient and effective service for a quality patient experience. There is a requirement in this role for you to be involved in research studies and teaching of patients, staff and the wider MDT.

Consultation skills module and Non-medical Prescribing module (which could be undertaken as part of a post graduate specialist qualification at level 6 or 7)

Accountable for own professional actions and not directly supervised.

To provide a microsuction and allergy testing service to patients following a relevant training programme

Be able to set-up additional nurse-led clinics in collaboration with the ACP and consultant team

Deputise and take charge of the given area

Actively contribute to setting and maintaining high standards of quality nursing care.

Participate in the effective joint clinical leadership and management responsibility for the clinic team.

Actively contribute to the improvement of services and the quality of care provision to meet the needs of patients, service users and their families.

To provide clinical expertise to the departmental team. To lead, support, supervise and teach staff, within the specialist area.

The post holder will work closely with and support the department / matron/ACP and multi-disciplinary team members in monitoring and maintaining policies, standards of nursing care, staff and service development within the department/ward environment.

The post holder is expected to always act in a manner consistent with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct, carrying out his/her duties in accordance with Trust policies and procedures

Work autonomously, providing an effective nurse-led service as needs dictate.

Demonstrate comprehensive holistic assessment of patients utilising a variety of advanced clinical skills, while acting as a role model, in line with the Clinical Nurse Specialist role for the service.

To assess and diagnose specific symptoms within own scope of practice. Advise medical and nursing staff and/or prescribe medications according to patients’ requirements, writing a record in the medical notes and reassessing according to the individual patient needs.

Provide an effective and accessible telephone advice service for patients and families and their carers.

Support innovations and change related to improvement of clinical services in relation to the specialty.

To participate in reviews of performance against Key Performance Indicators and co-operate in addressing areas of concern, in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team.

Collaborate in the development and monitoring of a job plan to ensure role and personal effectiveness.
