JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Registered Nurse/Operating Department Practitioner Area of work: Endoscopy JOB SUMMARY To develop skills, which enable the post holder to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care within sphere of responsibility. To assist in the management and organisation of work in the clinical area. To always act in a manner consistent with the NMC/HCPC Code of Professional Conduct carrying out his/her duties in accordance with BMSG policies and procedures. Section 1 - Main Responsibilities Professional/Clinical 1. Provide the delivery of evidence based nursing care by providing expert clinical assessment, care planning, care delivery, care evaluation and clinical advice in accordance with NMC/HCPC Code of Professional Conduct. 2. Ensure all records relating to patient care are accurate, clear, concise, legible and in accordance with the NMC/HCPC Standards for Records and Record Keeping. 3. Actively assess and manage risk within the clinical area. 4. Ensure adherence to BMSG Medicines Management Policy and the NMC/HCPC Standards for the Administration of Medicines. 5. Participate in audits of practice. 6. Participate in the teaching and supervision of other members of staff. 7. Support the Clinical Governance systems to delivering high quality of care. 8. Assist the Operational Managers in achieving budget control and order supplies when necessary. 9. Participate in personal development reviews for junior staff if required. 10. Work in accordance with the NMC code of professional conduct. Administrative/Managerial 1. To develop skills which enable the post holder to take charge of a shift and ensure organisation and delivery of patient care. 2. Support the Operational Managers in effective Resource Management. 3. Participate in ensuring the delivery of the Organisations targets. 4. Monitoring and maintaining stock levels of consumables and equipment. 5. Contribute to the design, development, and participation in new working practices and patterns following consultation and agreement with all concerned parties Human Resource Management 1. Participate in the training and development of other staff as appropriate. 2. Ensure communication of information of a complex nature is given sensitivity and confidentiality is maintained. Section 2 - Knowledge and Skills 1. Develop expert clinical knowledge appropriate to area of responsibility. 2. Frequently manage and participate in distressing situations. 3. Use professional judgement and initiative to promote safe practice. 4. Demonstrate knowledge of staff and resource management. 5. Communication of highly detailed information, which requires agreement, co-operation and prioritisation, within the multi-disciplinary team and external associated departments/hospitals. 6. Requirement to communicate to others where there may be some barriers to understanding. 7. The post holder will be developing physical skills hand and eye co-ordination. 8. To assist medical staff in endoscopy procedures after appropriate training 9. The post holder will be developing specialist knowledge and expertise in identifying potentially unsafe or damaged instruments and act accordingly. 10. The post holder will possess or be working towards gaining an in depth knowledge of protocols and procedures specific and local to practice.. Section 3 - Effort and Environment 1. Participate frequently in tasks requiring physical effort for short periods. 2. Deal with bodily fluids on a regular basis. 3. Frequently manage and participate in distressing situations. 4. Concentrate for long periods and respond to unpredictable patient and staff demands. 5. Maintain contemporaneous patient records at all times. 6. Required to stand in restricted positions for long periods of the working day. 7. Physically assist and supervise the positioning of patients prior and during procedures i.e. Transfer of patients Positioning of limbs to ensure optimum access and safety Section 4 - Additional Requirements 1. Risk Management (Health and Safety) a) You will follow risk management procedures at all times. The Risk Management procedures for the Organisation are held in both hard and soft copy. b) You are responsible for Risk Management issues in respect of yourself and your colleagues. c) If you identify a potential hazard you should report it to your manager/supervisor at once. If in doubt you should speak to your manager for guidance. d) You must always use safety equipment provided, and report any defects to your manager. 2. To avoid any behaviour which discriminates against your fellow employees, or potential employees on the grounds of their sex, sexual orientation, marital status, race, religion, creed, colour, nationality, ethnic origin or disability. 3. To safeguard at all times confidentiality of information relating to patients and staff. 4. To refrain from smoking in any areas of the premises. 5. To behave in a manner, which ensures the security of BMSG property and resources. 6. To abide by all relevant BMSG Policies and Procedures. This list of duties and responsibilities is by no means exhaustive, and the post holder may be required to undertake other relevant and appropriate duties as required. This job description is subject to regular review and appropriate modification in consultation with the post holder.
