Crynodeb

This post is designed to support postgraduate medical trainees (at Core or ST level), who wish to make a commitment to education as part of their career. The 12-month fixed-term post, based at BHRUT, is aimed at those who wish to build on their personal teaching experience, develop expertise in educational theory and practice, and undertake supervised educational research.

The post holder will have a designated educational mentor who will oversee their development as an educator during the placement and co-ordinate opportunities for personal development. A customized programme of training and educational experience will be designed around the needs of the individual.

Although an enthusiasm for teaching is a prerequisite, no assumptions will be made about formal knowledge of educational theory or practice. Hands-on teaching will be central to the post, as will a critical engagement with educational issues around providing undergraduate and postgraduate training in a changing context, both nationally and locally.

Participants will be encouraged to develop a sustained commitment to education within their clinical career and to consider taking a postgraduate qualification in medical education. It is expected that the Fellow will attend Health Education England’s range of faculty development courses, contributing as an attendee, participant observer, teacher, or co-facilitator (depending on experience and expertise and constraints of each individual course).

The medical education fellow will support continuation andimprovement of medical education and training throughout the trust, both for undergraduates and postgraduates. The Fellow will have the opportunity to undertake 2 x clinical session 1 standard day to keep their clinical skills up to date. The fellow must be able to work in a team environment.

The fellow must have knowledge of the postgraduate and medical undergraduate training curricula. Must have full GMC registration, must also have completed the UK Foundation/Core Training Programmes.

The fellow must have good communication skills to deliver CBL teaching for undergraduates and postgraduate resident doctors.

We’re an organisation that is getting better and better. We were the most improved Trust in England for A&E performance in 2023/24; we’re no longer in special measures; and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, has been named the top CEO by the Health Service Journal. Our improvements are driven by a determination to deliver care we’re proud of and that our patients are happy with.

Many of our 8,000 staff – who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and the majority are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. More than 400 of them are on apprenticeship programmes and we’re proud to be a London Living Wage employer.

We operate from two main sites - King George Hospital (KGH) in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London – more than 300,000 people visited our A&Es in 2023.

Patients across northeast London are benefitting from two new state of the art theatres at KGH and our Community Diagnostic Centres at Barking Community Hospital and St George’s Health and Wellbeing Hub will significantly increase the number of scans that can be carried out.

We’re looking forward to introducing an electronic patient record next year. This will mean the records of any patient visiting one of the seven hospitals run by BHRUT and Barts Health will be accessible to the clinical teams. It’ll make things easier for staff and will be better for patients.

A. Teaching

The post holder will have a regular schedule of teaching commitments and will actively contribute to the development and delivery of the Trust’s education programme for undergraduate medical students, Foundation trainees and Core Training junior doctors (levels FY1/FY2, IMT1-3 CT1-3 and IM Stage 2 Medicine – ST4+). The Medial Education Fellow will collaborate with the Simulation Human Factors Training Leads (Medical and Nursing), Head of Postgraduate Medical Education/Simulation Training Manager, Head of Undergraduate Medical Education, Director of Medical Education, Training Programme Directors and College Tutors in the co-ordination and delivery of the relevant teaching programmes.

The post holder, in collaboration and with guidance from the Undergraduate Medical Education Team will deliver in-house teaching programmes for undergraduate medical students undertaking placements within the Trust. This will include CBL teaching or coordinating resident trainees to teach students and could also include, for example, development of clinical interview skills teaching. The Fellow will collate and respond to student feedback regarding the teaching programme to ensure an appropriate range and level of teaching topics is provided.

There will be opportunities to audit aspects of both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes. The fellow will also be given the opportunity to undertake further post graduate studies in medical education for example this may include studying for a Post Graduate Certificate in Medical Education.

The Trust is keen to allow the post holder to develop other teaching programmes/modules that may be specialty specific or of interest to the individual post holder. The post holder may also be asked to participate in the development of self-directed learning packages, which may include e-learning for certain modules within induction and mandatory training. The post holder will be supported by the Postgraduate Medical Education administrative team.

B. Simulation/Human Factors Training

The Fellow will be trained in the use of the Simulation Centre and will have the opportunity to help develop scenarios and facilitate simulation/human factors training for all Doctors and multi-disciplinary staff. The fellow’s involvement in the delivery of resident trainees’ core curricula/mandated Simulation/Human Factors Training programme is mandatory. This will include actively pursuing and developing the multi-disciplinary in-situ Simulation/Human Factors training that is now established within the Trust. They will attend a formal Training the Trainers simulation/human factors course at the earliest opportunity.

C. Educational Research

The post holder will have the opportunity to take part in a range of educational research activities, particularly on the training of undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors but including other groups of learners. These options are aligned with existing research activity and include (but are not confined to) the evaluation of existing teaching programmes within the Trust, identifying problem areas and developing possible solutions.

The post holder will be supported to generate publishable outputs, including conference presentations (national and international) and publications in peer reviewed medical and educational journals.

D. Clinical commitment

A clinical commitment of up to 2 clinical sessions per week (1 x standard day) within the Trust will ensure that the post holder maintains their clinical involvement during the attachment and encounters postgraduate doctors. Details of this clinical component will depend on the appointee’s clinical specialty interest and evidenced clinical experience.

E. Learning about Medical Education Structures and Roles

To learn about medical education from a more systemic perspective, the post holder will have the opportunity to attend the Trust Postgraduate Medical Education Group and will participate in regular Simulation/Human Factors forums.
