The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) is an executive agency of the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, and works on behalf of the Scottish Government and Welsh Government. The Safety, Health and Wellbeing (SHaW) Health & Safety Support Advisor plays a key role in supporting APHA and its staff in improving health and workplace wellbeing by assisting in the progression, and supporting the delivery, of the APHA Health and Wellbeing Plan.

The Advisor also supports Defra in its priority work, particularly in relation to mental health and stress and acts as a source of advice and guidance on all matters relating to health and workplace wellbeing.

The postholder will continually lead by example and be an exemplar in the Agency's Health, Safety & Wellbeing Actions and Behaviours and Standards as part of developing, maintaining and supporting the health and wellbeing culture of the Agency.

  • Supporting the Occupational Health and Wellbeing Manager in delivering and monitoring the APHA Wellbeing plan for APHA.
  • Being a point of contact for health, safety, and wellbeing issues across the Agency.
  • Develop and provide communication in relation to campaigns in line with the health and wellbeing plan.
  • Gathering and presenting evidence and data on health and wellbeing issues from various sources including from HR and the Occupational Health (OH) and Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) provider.
  • Provide relevant data so that periodical reports on workplace wellbeing and work-related stress can be produced.
  • Supporting the Occupational Health and Wellbeing Manager in various networks of Wellbeing Champions, Mental Health First aiders including facilitating quarterly network meetings (virtual).
  • Developing and delivering briefings and training workshops relating to various elements of workplace wellbeing (e.g. work-related stress), collaborating with Defra People Safety Team where appropriate to ensure cost-effective delivery and consistency of training.
  • Liaising with and supporting APHA colleagues who may have experienced a traumatic work-related event or a reported work-related stress case, ensuring they are signposted to an appropriate resource and supported by current and/or new and innovative methods of intervention.
  • Support external contract services including Headspace and the EAP.
  • Working with the Occupational Health/Health Surveillance Advisor, develop the SHaWPoint intranet site and support the migration of documents and other relevant H&S information onto this single source of H&S information.
  • Act as physical Asset Owner for SHaW, ensuring all physical SHaW Assets are registered, and the register is maintained.
  • Act as project manager for SHaW, leading on all aspects of action recording, tracking and management to close them out in a timely manner. Including GIAA audits, HSE interventions, team meetings, document management.
