As of September 2025, Brownhill Learning Community will defederate into two separate entities. A specialist SEMH Special School under new leadership of Narda Sestanovic and a Pupil Referral Service (PSR) under new leadership of Dave Shields. Both Schools have had new staffing structures, designed to create an environment that will enhance learner’s engagement, wellbeing, and learning.
The Special School will be located in Heywood, Rochdale and will cater for learner in KS2-KS4 with a commitment to delivering a nurturing, trauma informed, inclusive, and aspirational environment tailored to the individual needs of our learners.
The Pupil Referral Service (PRS) will be based across three sites within the Rochdale Borough and will cater for pupils from KS2-KS4. The PRS are looking for candidates who are committed to working with the most vulnerable and in need pupils. You will need to be passionate about what you do and determined to help our young people overcome their barriers to success.
This is an exciting and ambitious new chapter for both schools, who are both looking for Science Teachers.
As a Science Teacher, you will be responsible for planning, delivering, and assessing engaging science lessons for secondary students, many of whom have SEN and SEMH needs. Your role will involve delivering the science curriculum in an accessible and inclusive manner, using creative approaches to make the subject engaging and relevant for all students. You will work closely with other staff to provide tailored support and interventions to help students develop both their academic abilities and their emotional resilience.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan, deliver, and assess differentiated science lessons for secondary-aged students, adapting content and methods to meet the needs of students with SEN and SEMH.
- Use practical, hands-on approaches to teaching science to make the subject engaging and accessible.
- Foster a positive, inclusive classroom environment that encourages students to participate and explore scientific concepts.
- Support students in managing emotional and behavioural challenges, using strategies such as restorative practices and positive reinforcement.
- Monitor student progress and provide constructive feedback to both students and parents, identifying areas for improvement and additional support.
- Collaborate with the Senior Leadership Team, SENCO, teaching assistants, and other staff to ensure that all students receive the tailored support they need to succeed.
- Promote students’ social and emotional development alongside their academic progress, helping them develop self-confidence, resilience, and a growth mindset.
Both School’s welcome applicants from MS1-UPS3 who will all have an additional SEN point 1 award.
Visits to the current Special School (located on Heights Lane in Rochdale) are encouraged on Friday 13th June between 10:00am-12:00pm.
