FJA are recruiting on behalf of a leading service provider in the utilities industry for an experienced Principal Ecologist to strengthen their team.
Location: Norfolk, Suffolk and the Lincolnshire area

Principal Ecologist responsibilities:
Lead and oversee multifaceted ecological initiatives across a diverse range of renewable energy, residential, and commercial projects throughout the East of England.
This includes developments under the Town and Country Planning Act as well as Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects.
Prepare and peer review various ecology reports, including Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA), Habitat Regulations Assessments (HRA), and Ecology Chapters for Environmental Statements (ES).
Support team development by delivering in-house training, offering guidance, and providing line management for junior team members.
Collaborate effectively within a team of ecologists.
Conduct Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments, analyse the Biodiversity Metric, and develop practical on-site and off-site solutions for client.
Manage projects by preparing fee proposals and tenders, handling invoicing, and overseeing project finances.
Develop and execute ecological mitigation strategies, including obtaining mitigation licenses for species such as bats, great crested newts, dormice, badgers, and water voles.
Principal Ecologist requirements:
Proficient in UK planning and environmental law.
Experienced in UK Habitat Classification and habitat condition assessments, with FISC Level 4 certification preferred but not mandatory.
Proficient in designing and carrying out diverse ecology surveys, analysing data to deliver comprehensive ecological assessments and practical client solutions.
Experienced in ecological mitigation and protected species licensing.
Collaborative team player who supports a growing team while also working independently.
Hold a full UK driving licence and willing to travel regionally, including occasional overnight stays.
Bachelor’s and/or master’s degree in Ecology or a related discipline.
CIEEM Membership
Hold at least one protected species survey licence (great crested newt and bats highly desirable)
