Introduction to YSJ university

York St John is an ambitious, modern university at the heart of historic York and there has never been a more exciting time to join us.

As one of the fastest growing universities in the UK over recent years, we have a new strategy for the next decade, emphasising our commitment to widening opportunity through the power of education and contributing our talents to creating a fairer world, and a more prosperous region. We are putting inspirational learning and impactful research at the heart of this strategy, recognising our academic expertise as our greatest asset.

The School

The School of Humanities comprises subjects such as History, English Literature, Creative Writing, Religion, Media and Film, Geography, Politics, International Relations and more. Our burgeoning national and international research profile, excellent teaching and learning, and welcoming and inclusive ethos supports an exceptional student experience.

The Liberal Arts Foundation Year (est. 2017) is a flagship programme that exemplifies the University and School’s commitment to widening participation in higher education and to social justice. This level 3 (pre-degree) one-year programme comprises a range of carefully-structured interdisciplinary modules with integrated skills development. Pedagogic innovation and student support are central to our ethos, and we delight in seeing our students progress onto to degrees in all subject areas within the School of Humanities, as well as some in other Schools.

The role

We are seeking a lecturer (0.5fte) with expertise in modern history, politics and international relations, and a strong commitment to widening participation in higher education. Your work will involve inter-disciplinary teaching in a variety of forms (e.g. lecture, seminar, workshop, tutorial, trip/visit, skills session, and including team-teaching) and will include module leadership, setting and marking assessments, and the provision of pastoral and academic support to students. You will join a small team of highly collegial staff who work closely together on all aspects of the programme to provide a high-quality experience for our students, and who are all active in research and publication.

Key requirements

A doctoral qualification, with expertise in modern history/politics/international relations, is essential. Candidates should have some prior experience of teaching entry-level undergraduate and/or level 3 students, and be able to demonstrate ongoing commitment to research and publication. There will be a clear expectation that the successful candidate will work towards Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy if this is not already held.
