Crynodeb

University College London Hospitals (UCLH) is seeking a Consultant in Upper GI (UGI) and General Surgery to join our renowned Gastrointestinal Service which hosts the Oesophagogastric Centre, specialising in the management of both malignant and benign disorders.
Working alongside a skilled and supportive team, you will deliver high-quality, integrated care to a wide range of UGI and general surgical patients. A core focus of this role will be focused on reducing the waiting list for benign UGI surgery, with a significant portion of your time allocated to elective operating. You will also participate in endoscopy sessions (including OGDs), outpatient clinics, and contribute to the care of cancer patients where appropriate—particularly as part of out-of-hours cover.
You will join the regional tertiary UGI rota on a 1:4.5 basis and may be involved in the general surgery on-call rota as required, offering a varied and rewarding workload.
As part of our ongoing commitment to excellence, you will also help improve clinical pathways within the GI Services Division—especially around timely triaging, referral management, and reducing waiting times for elective cases.

CV required for application

To apply for this role, you must be eligible for full UK GMC Registration and either be on the GMC Specialist List in General Surgery or within six months of attaining this. You will have proven experience in UGI and general surgery, with clinical audit experience and a strong background in working within multidisciplinary teams. Proficiency in both open and laparoscopic surgery, especially within UGI, is essential. A commitment to teaching and research is highly desirable, with a proven ability to teach at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
UCLH offers a stimulating and collaborative environment where clinical excellence, teaching, and innovation go hand in hand. You’ll have access to excellent facilities, supportive colleagues, and opportunities for professional development, audit, and teaching. Attendance at audit and clinical governance sessions is a key part of the role and prioritised accordingly.
