The role is in the Grant Delivery Directorate (GDD) Analysis team. GDD Analysis provides embedded analytical support to GDD. The focus of this role will be on supporting delivery of the Government’s Energy Intensive Industry support.
We are a multi-profession analytical team, bringing together economists, social researchers and operational researchers. We work closely with policy colleagues and other analysts in DBT and cross-Whitehall, especially DESNZ. We lead on analysis of grant delivery for DBT.

We undertake/commission a range of analytical projects: analysis of complex data sets, modelling and coding, field work to collect new data, external engagement, case study work, value for money assessments and policy options appraisal. We work flexibly and collaboratively across the team and offer opportunities to work in different areas of the team depending on business needs and team members' development needs. We are an inclusive and diverse team that aspires to be a great place to work. We take work life balance seriously and seek to ensure that everyone can grow and develop. For us, analysis is about making an impact and influencing real life outcomes.

This role will be responsible for developing analytical and data insights to allow timely and accurate delivery of grant support to strategic Energy Intensive Industry (EII) companies. The role will also include leading the visualisation of wider DBT-grant activities across the Department. With the help of a small team of analysts, the post-holder will have a key role to play in shaping a high-profile grant delivery agenda. Key responsibilities include:

  • Delivering EII subsidies to qualifying/exempt firms: The postholder will be responsible for delivery of the EII Compensation Scheme, and ensuring it is QA’d to the highest standards within an automated process. The postholder will also be supporting the EII Exemption scheme. Together the EII Compensation and Exemption Schemes are one of the highest political and financial risk grant areas for the Department and hence the postholder will be responsible for very high-profile work. The role involves close communication with companies, analysts and policy teams and frequent senior level communication. The postholder will also be leading on further automating the EII Delivery process and embedding it into DBT;
  • Leading delivery of a new dashboard: The GDD is responsible for delivering grants and subsidies in DBT. To support this function, the postholder will lead a project to build a new dashboard to visually showcase the real-world impact of the Directorate on jobs, investment and regional impacts in the UK. There is scope for flexibility with the tools and approach used to develop this dashboard and the postholder will be able to directly influence how this is built/adapted;
  • Engaging directly with senior officials to iterate the most impactful versions of the dashboard;
  • Line management of one junior analyst.

This role would suit someone looking to promote the importance of analysis and visual representations in grant delivery through producing robust analytical and data-led approaches to timely and innovative company support.
