Islamic & Middle Eastern Studies, part of the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures, seeks to appoint a Teaching Fellow in Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies. The position will be available from 1st September 2025 to 31th December 2026.



The Opportunity:

The postholder will be required to teach specific Honours level and PGT options to cover for the absent colleague who specialises in Gender and Media in the Middle East. They will course organise and teach at least one Arabic language based and one discursive Honours (+PGT) option. At postgraduate level, their duties will also include contributing to the two core team-taught MSc courses. The successful applicant will also be expected to provide dissertation and/or long project supervision on both UG and PGT level, both within the department and across the School as needed, as well as undertake a number of administrative roles as required by the department.

The successful candidate will have experience in the design and delivery of teaching units within the higher education sector, and the ability to deliver courses at high level. They will be also expected to contribute to the administration of the subject area, including course organisation.

This role is part-time and for 28 hours per week (0.8 FTE).

Your skills and attributes for success:

A PhD in an appropriate discipline, with relevant undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience.
Evidence of fluent or fluent proficiency in English.
Evidence of high level of competence in written Arabic and Arabic to English translation skills.
Expertise and training in the wider field of Arabic/ Middle Eastern Studies.
A commitment to high quality teaching and learning with experience and demonstrable success in delivering effective university teaching.
A demonstrable capacity to create teaching material.
A proven record of ability to manage time and to work to strict deadlines.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
