Summary
Do you have experience of project delivery?
Are you someone who is happy to communicate at all levels?
Do you have a strategic mindset, leadership skills and a passion for innovation?
Freight and Borders (FAB) is a fast-paced and dynamic environment where you will have the opportunity to be part of a fantastic and inclusive team creating and influencing the policy and delivery of some of the Government’s highest priorities.
If you want to be part of a team whose work has an impact on millions of people’s lives across the country, we want to hear from you.
Freight and logistics matter! Every item of food on a supermarket shelf, box of medicine at a pharmacy and high-tech machine part in the UK has had a fascinating journey to get to its destination. Recent years have seen extraordinary innovation in how that happens but also revealed how fragile critical supply chains can be when there are shocks.
Our team is here to ensure Government is working with industry to help this crucial part of the economy function effectively. That means responding to those short-term shocks. It also means delivering a plan to ensure a vibrant long-term future for the sector including securing its part in the Net Zero transition and in driving growth.
We also work with teams across Whitehall and within DfT to deliver successful border arrangements. That is not always easy. For example when there is disruption at the border crossings in Kent the team works closely with the Kent and Medway Resilience Forum to minimise the impact of those issues on the road network. There are also opportunities within the team to be part of innovative long-term work that will shape the way our borders work for many years to come.
We sit in the centre of a lot of work happening in the Department for Transport and work collaboratively with teams with a specific focus on maritime, aviation, rail or roads issues. Our central role means those in the team have a good sense of key strands of transport policy, and scope to influence that work.
The role of Head of Directors Office and PMO is central to supporting the FAB directorate in the delivery of a portfolio of several high-profile projects and programmes, alongside assisting FAB’s Director to lead a directorate of over 100 members of staff.
Responsibilities
Include, but not limited to:
- Leading a team of Project Delivery and Business professionals to provide a best-in-class PMO and office function in support of the Freight and Borders Director.
- Leading a team to deliver high-quality programme management, business management, financial management, L&D, recruitment, procurement and corporate activity on behalf of FAB.
- Designing and administering the FAB portfolio’s governance model, ensuring that they evolve to meet the changing needs of the Directorate and portfolio. This includes consideration of how structures can be effectively orchestrated with cross-Whitehall and Cabinet Office governance processes.
- Providing leadership across the Directorate on Project Delivery and business management skills and their application.
- Supporting the development of the PMO team and its processes in line with changing programme and/or policy requirements.
