An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Ophthalmology department at BHRUT as a clinical fellow for Neuro-Ophthalmology and General Ophthalmology. We warmly welcome you to our busy and dynamic team, which delivers a comprehensive and specialised Ophthalmology service to a population of over 750,000. Our team boasts of highly experienced specialists in Medical Retina, Cornea, Paediatrics, Neuro-Ophthalmology , Glaucoma and Oculoplastics. We have a close working relationship with other specialties within the Trust that further support the service.
To support our team, we have efficient, innovative and well led Nursing, Orthoptic and Optometrist teams.
We are looking for a team player, keen to develop and take an active part in improving patient pathways and experience.
· The post holder will be trained in diagnosing and managing conditions relating to neuro-ophthalmology, joining the consultant led team.
· The successful applicants will work innovatively with our clinical team and a range of partners to research, design and deliver this service. Key partners will be the Trust A&E Departments, Optometrists, GPs, Nurses and Managers in primary and secondary care
· The post holder will be involved in neuro-ophthalmology outpatient clinics and also have sessions supporting eye urgent care.
· The post holder will participate in the on-going provision of Ophthalmology services in the Eye Unit and contribute to the development of the unit.
· The post holder will work with colleagues to provide a comprehensive and coordinated Ophthalmology service across the Trust and will work with consultants in running the service.
Under the leadership of our Chair Jacqui Smith and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, we provide care for the residents of three of the most diverse London boroughs. More than half of our 7,500 strong workforce are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups and most live in Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge. We also provide healthcare services to people in south west Essex, and specialist neurosciences services to the whole of the county.
Our services include all the major specialties of large acute hospitals, operating from two main sites - King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We also provide outpatient services at Brentwood Community Hospital, Barking Hospital, Loxford Polyclinic, and Harold Wood Polyclinic. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London.
As we recover from Covid-19, we’re proud to be leading the way nationally in reducing the time our patients wait to get the treatment they need. The pandemic provided the drive for our teams to innovate and change.
We know we have more work to do to improve waiting times for urgent and emergency care, and our performance against the four-hour emergency access standard remains challenged, in comparison to many other London trusts.
We are particularly proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre; Radiotherapy Centre; Hyper Acute Stroke Unit; and dedicated breast care service at King George Hospital. We’re also pleased to be part of the NEL Cancer Alliance.
The post holder will have continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge and under the care of consultant ophthalmologists within the neuro-ophthalmology and eye casualty services. They will undertake administrative duties associated with the care of their patients and assist the running of clinics in line with Trust policies and Royal College of Ophthalmologists guidelines.
The successful applicant will be required to participate in medical and clinical audit arrangements in the Trust.
All doctors should be registered with the College for continuing professional development (CPD) and take study leave where appropriate (see BMA guidance, appendix 1).
The post holder is expected to give at least 6 weeks’ notice of annual leave and study leave, remembering their responsibility to service provision.
