Job summary:
The postholder will be an autonomous, expert practitioner of normal midwifery practice and act as a role model for midwives in all areas of practice
The postholder will work in partnership with the Director of Midwifery, as part of the Midwifery Leadership Team, to:
• Provide leadership that allows collaborative development and implementation of quality initiatives and health programmes which reduce health inequalities, increase safe birth and improve outcomes for mothers and babies
• Provide a consultancy service that promotes, and is an advocate for, safe midwifery practice
• Act as a resource in all areas of research, audit and professional midwifery practice
• Provide clinical leadership and expert advice and support to all colleagues providing midwifery care in both primary and secondary care settings
• Share knowledge and initiatives locally, regionally and nationally to facilitate changes in midwifery practice that improve both the quality of care and the experience for birthing families

The Post holder will:
• Function clinically as an expert in midwifery practice, promoting professional leadership and clinical excellence working in collaboration with the appropriate multi-disciplinary groups to meet the specific

needs of pregnant women
• Work for up to 50% of the time in clinical practice - the role must be clinically focussed, with the emphasis on caring for women with complex social, psychological and or health needs and wholly depends on work priorities agreed with the Director of Midwifery
• When working with birthing families, exercise judgement in assessing wide-ranging, complex, sensitive and often contentious information/opinion while also acting as the advocate for the birthing person’s choices and maintaining the focus of promoting safe pregnancy and birth
• Agree and communicate compromise and solutions where birthing families choice is outside of Trust guideline and ensure and promote options to enable the delivery of optimum care, choice and access for women



Here in Oxfordshire, we offer a unique set up of our Maternity Services with around 7500 babies born annually.


We have 4 stand-alone Midwifery-Led Birth units within the county. These are based at Banbury, Chipping Norton, Wantage and Wallingford and we also offer home births to all areas. There is also an integrated Midwifery-Led birth unit, where around 10%of women and birthing peoplechoose to go in labour. As a tertiary hospital, the John Radcliffe is composed of a Delivery Suite with 3 Maternity Theatres and a specific Maternity Recovery Ward. We work closely with specialist services such as theFetaland Maternal Medicine Unit, Breech Team, and Maternity Bereavement Teams.Midwives employed within the servicehave the opportunity torotate to all our units/departments providing care to both low andhigh riskwomen.


For those working with us, we have a substantial support network for staff, focusing on wellbeingand development.This includes a team of professional Midwifery Advocates, Wellbeing Champions, staff networksand a staff Maternity Psychologist. • Provide expert specialist advice to women and families and staff in the health care community specifically in relation to public health issues
• Provide expert knowledge and advice to support the midwifery team in enabling staff and women to make better choices for their health and that of their families specifically in relation to smoking, nutrition, breast feeding and safeguarding
