Crynodeb
The Cellular Pathology Department at Southmead Hospital is a well equipped, accredited by UKAS to ISO15189(2022) and approved by IBMS for training. With a workload of approximately 80,000 requests per year, we provide a comprehensive service (Histopathology, Cytopathology and Immunohistochemistry) to the two acute Trusts in Bristol, local GPs and other centres in the south west. The work is varied, covering all specialisms with the exception of Neuropathology.
Applications are invited from HCPC registered biomedical scientists who have experience of working in a histology setting. You will need to be an enthusiastic, adaptable individual, passionate about working in healthcare, and enjoy working as part of a friendly team providing the Histology service in this busy department.

As a BMS you will work across all areas of the department including cut up, main lab, immunohistochemistry and special stains as well as our satellite laboratory (ESL) based at the BRI.
The Histopathology department has a strong team working culture, always looking to improve to enhance not only the service we provide our users, but also the experiences we offer our team. Part of this development includes the implementation of digital pathology with the aim of digitising all slides produced in the lab. Being a large department you will gain knowledge and experience across a wide range of activities and specimens.
As a member of the BMS team you will rotate through all areas of the department, working to develop your skills and knowledge whilst taking an active role in the day to day activities of the laboratory. Your day to day duties will include but not be limited to:
• Specimen receipt and booking in
• Embedding
• Microtomy
• Biopsy/ specimen transfer
• Frozen sections
• QC of slides for reporting
• Special stains
• Immunohistochemistry
• Rotation to ESL (BRI)
This is a full time post (37.5 hours per week). The laboratory currently operates 7.00 am to 6.00 pm and applicants will need to be flexible meet the needs of the service; this may include regular Saturdays.
