Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and hardworking individual to join our team as a Seaweed Harvester and Processor.
This is a physical job that requires a passion for outdoor work, adaptability to different weather conditions, and a commitment to sustainable harvesting practices. We work around spring tides, so it will be roughly 7 days on, 7 days off, varying with weather, tides and season, and includes weekend work. Hours are generally 6-7h per day, within the 9-5 time period. There are extra days to be worked around this when required for harvesting (by freediving during neap tides in the spring and summer), and processing (seaweed milling).
Key Responsibilities
• Seaweed Harvesting: Collect seaweed with scissors from designated shores, and to a lesser extent by freediving, ensuring sustainable practices and minimal environmental impact.
• Processing & Sorting: Sort and clean harvested seaweed on-site, removing debris and ensuring quality standards are met.
• Equipment Handling: Safely operate and maintain harvesting tools, boats, and other equipment.
• Weather Adaptability: Work in varying conditions, including rain, wind, and cold, with awareness of tides and seasonal fluctuations.
• Logistics & Transport: Assist with the transportation of harvested seaweed to processing or storage facilities.
• Health & Safety: Follow safety guidelines, including using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and comply with environmental regulations.
• From time to time we may require you to help deploy or harvest seaweed from our seaweed farm
Essential Requirements
• Physical Fitness: Ability to handle physically demanding tasks day after day, including lifting, bending, walking over slippery rocks, and prolonged standing.
• Adaptability: Willingness to work weekends and some holidays.
• Team Player: Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a small team.
• Sustainability Mindset: Commitment to environmentally responsible harvesting practices.
Desirable Skills
• Experience in a similar role, such as fishing, farming, or other outdoor manual work.
• Knowledge of seaweed species and their applications.
• Familiarity with the ocean, operating small boats and outboard engines, maritime safety, VHF radio use.
• First Aid or water safety certifications.
• Full UK driving license.
What We Offer
• The opportunity to work in a unique industry and environment.
• Opportunities for training and development in sustainable aquaculture.
• A dynamic and supportive work environment in stunning coastal locations.
• The chance to contribute to a growing and sustainable industry.
• Flexibility around availability
Note: Applicants should have a strong work ethic, resilience, and enthusiasm for outdoor work.
