Sunderland Marina Ltd

We are seeking a full-time Manager to join our team. Sunderland Marina (based out of the Marine Activities Centre building); operates a Marina which includes approximately 200 moorings, both Pontoon and Fore & Aft moorings, we are a landlord to several businesses that are based within the MAC building and we are manned 24/7 365 days a year. You will be leading a small team of Marina Operatives / Night-shift staff.

Prior experience of working in a marina is not a pre-requisite. Previous involvement in a marine environment, personally (as a water user for example) or professionally is advantageous, but training including RYA Powerboat licence and VHF radio licence will be provided as required.

The role is a combination of service management, delivery and the successful candidate will have the ability to lead a small team, possessing good customer service skills as the primary point of contact for our users.

Our organisation is unique in its structure; Sunderland Marina is a private limited company owned by a registered charity Adventure Sunderland, which provides outdoor education opportunities for the local community. The Adventure Sunderland building is located on the sea front a few hundred meters away.

Job Title: Facilities Manager (Marina)
Hours: Average of 42 hours per week, including unsociable hours and weekends, by means of a 5 on / 3 off shift pattern.

Purpose of the Job:

Day to day responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of Sunderland Marina. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive and deputising for him in his absence.
Primary Responsibilities:
1. To assume day to day responsibility for the operation of Sunderland Marina within the defined guidelines;
2. To have specific responsibility for compliance with good working practices in accordance with current legislation, Health and Safety Directives and Company policy relating to Health and Safety issues;
3. To deputise for the Chief Executive in his absence, within defined guidelines.
Main Duties:
1. The preparation and implementation of a structured maintenance regime for the Marina.
2. The development and maintenance of all appropriate and necessary administrative functions, operations and systems to monitor the performance of the Marina.
3. The maintenance of the operational procedures and codes of practice for the Marine Activities Centre and marina.
4. Customer service investigating and resolving any complaints from the public and customers to protect the Marine Activities Centres image and make recommendations to change policy or working practices arising from this action.
5. To plan and ensure that customer facilities meet specified standards.
6. To manage the day to day running of the Marina, including
• collection of mooring fees;
• safe operation of all facilities - including fuel and lifting operations;
• allocation of work to Marina Operatives;
• liaison with Adventure Sunderland’s Centre Manager on all matters of common influence;
• liaison with all site users on a day to day basis.
7. To assist in the training and development of staff and to undertake such personal training as may be deemed necessary to undertake the duties and responsibilities of the post.
8. To contribute to the maintenance and development of the organisation’s website.
9. To monitor, resolve or report to Chief Executive any contravention of lease agreements by Tenants or Berth Holders.
10. To attend user group and customer meetings, where deemed appropriate.
11. To carry out any other duties commensurate with the post, as deemed appropriate, by the Chief Executive.
Job Holder’s Subordinates
Marina Operatives and MO night-shift;
Adventure Sunderland Instructors – in the absence of the AS Centre Manager or when under supervision whilst working at the MAC or in the Marina;
Contractors when required to work on specific tasks as delegated by Chief Executive.

Person Specification
Experience in maintaining good Health & Safety, reviewing practices, assessing risk.
Good administrative IT skills (predominantly Microsoft Word & Excel), able to communicate well with customers in person or by letter/email.
Previous experience in a marine environment, an understanding of tides and moorings advantageous, but training will be given as required.
Competent swimmer.
Previous supervisory or management role with responsibility for team members.
Conditions of Service
The basic annual leave is 25 days per annum pro rata to be taken at times of low operational demand, agreed in advance with the Chief Executive.
Salary: £30 - 35K pa paid monthly in arrears, plus enrolment in Nest pension scheme.
The Marina is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the post holder will be required to work during statutory Public Holidays as appropriate.
The post holder will be directly responsible to the Chief Executive and will undertake such other duties as may be directed by the Management in the interest of the organisation.
An emergency call out system is operated and all staff are expected to participate if required.
The post requires a 6 month probationary period. Termination of employment is no less than one month’s notice in writing.
