Between 1999 and 2015, hundreds of sub-postmasters and sub-postmistresses were wrongly convicted after shortfalls of money appeared in their Post Office branches, due to faults with Horizon software. This has been a very high-profile scandal both in media and in Parliament and has been described as one of the most widespread miscarriages of justice in British history. Ensuring fast and fair compensation is a DBT and No.10 priority.
When the Horizon System Offences Bill passed in 2024, individuals with overturned convictions were able to seek financial redress through DBT’s Horizon Convictions Redress scheme (HCRS). The Horizon Convictions Redress team works closely with other teams in the Department, with stakeholders and delivery partners to ensure that victims receive redress swiftly and fairly.
On the 3rd of June, cases within Post Office’s Overturned Convictions scheme will be moving into this scheme and the team is looking to build additional capacity and resilience within its public facing casework team.
We are seeking dynamic and motivated individuals to work on Horizon scandal related redress casework over the next 2 years.
While the work – and the responsibilities of individual posts – will evolve over time and may change as our delivery priorities change, we are looking for strong performers who: possess sound judgement, strong attention to detail and can work with discretion and pace. You will need to be able to:
- Establish and maintain productive working relationships across the team and beyond.
- Undertake work on a range of areas, problem solving and preparing advice for senior decision making.
- Draft clear, well-written documents and correspondence as necessary, recognising that material is likely to be regularly quoted and scrutinised externally.
- Maintain, interrogate and report on data, with an eye for detail and accuracy - spotting and highlighting patterns and trends so that issues can be rectified in a timely manner.
