Summary
Based within the Aintree Diabetes Centre at Aintree Hospital you will work closely with all members of the multi-disciplinary team in the management of highly complex diabetic and vascular foot complications and will be involved in our shared goal of providing excellence in diabetes foot care to this group of patients.
You will work both mainly in the out-patient setting, working at an advanced level alongside consultant colleagues in Diabetes, Vascular and Orthopaedic services.
Currently we undertake three consultant led Diabetic Foot Clinics weekly within the Centre, together with weekly multi-disciplinary ward rounds and MDT clinical meetings.
You will need to demonstrate relevant post graduate knowledge of the diabetic foot ideally at MSc or equivalent level, together with at least 3 years’ experience in the management of the high-risk patient.
You will need to be a dynamic and highly motivated individual, possessing excellent clinical, organisational and IT skills. An ability to communicate effectively with other healthcare professionals is essential as is the ability to work well within a team.

To act as a clinical diabetes foot specialist within the multidisciplinary team.
To be responsible for the day to day clinical provision of acute podiatry and wound clinics in the multidisciplinary diabetes centre and acute podiatry clinics.
To have highly developed physical skills, precision hand/eye co-ordination which involves highly skilled debridement techniques of acute/chronic, neuropathic and ischaemic wounds, often for long
periods.
To assist with the supervision of students and junior staff when required to do so.
To actively participate in the professional development programme of the Podiatry Department
To ensure effective communication of complex, highly sensitive and emotional information to patients “at risk” of diabetes related foot problems, including vulnerable, terminally ill, or pre/post amputee patients, requiring excellent interpersonal, negotiative and counselling skills.
Excellent interpersonal skills are required in liaison with both primary and secondary care professionals in ensuring seamless delivery of care to the patient with diabetes. Often negotiation skills are tested.

To provide podiatry treatment in a variety of clinical settings:
• Outpatient clinics with multi-disciplinary team in Diabetes directorate
• Outpatient clinics with multi-disciplinary team in Rehabilitation directorate
• Acute hospital wards
To have the capability to move and handle patients who may be immobile, wheelchair or bed bound, often working in difficult conditions
To assess new and existing patients and develop individual treatment plans to meet their podiatric need, liaising with the patient and other health care professionals as appropriate, utilising highly developed specialist knowledge, underpinned by theory and practical experience. Assessment may include scan, x ray, swab to determine extent and urgency of treatment required.
To undertake comprehensive yearly foot screening including assessment of neurological, vascular and biomechanical status enabling risk status to be determined using appropriate care pathway
To challenge others to take an active part in developing knowledge, ideas and work practice.
To promote the service and disseminate Good Practice both internal and external to the Trust.
To be involved in the production of Diabetes Foot Health information for patients, carers and healthcare professionals.
Have the ability to diffuse conflict in confrontational/stressful situations
Liaise closely with admin and clerical staff in a clear and concise manner.
Employ good listening and supervisory skills when undertaking personal development reviews of junior staff.
Understand and account for learning styles when undertaking training of other clinicians
