Would you love the chance to have influence on the future of Aviation and Maritime policy and bring economic analysis to support and challenge proposed options?

Do you have a desire to make a difference by applying cutting edge understanding and evidence to policy development?

Would you like the chance to collaborate with a dedicated team of all analytical professions to deliver DfT’s strategic priorities?

If so, we’d love you to join us in the Aviation, Maritime and Borders Analysis team for this role as an aviation economist!

Situated in Aviation Maritime and Borders Analysis (AMBA) in the Department for Transport the role provides: high exposure to working with policy colleagues to ensure analytical evidence feeds directly into the policy making process; engagement with external stakeholders; taking ownership of how analysis can develop new evidence and directly inform policy decisions.

This role sits within one of five analytical sub teams within AMBA. AMBA is a multi-disciplinary analytical division with around 50 team members who provide expertise on modelling, economic analysis, statistical analysis, operational research, social research and advice on appraisal and evaluation to shape strategic thinking and policy development.

This role actively leads on Aviation commercial and strategy analysis. The post gives direct experience of leading and setting the direction for work programmes that cross analytical and policy boundaries - directly working in collaboration with the Aviation Commercial; Strategy & Sponsorship policy team. That policy team has responsibility for: shaping the Aviation Directorates strategic direction; ensuring consumers are central to policymaking; and monitoring the aviation sector’s commercial health.

Team members work flexibly across team boundaries, supporting each other to deliver against the top priorities for our Directorate Group (Aviation, Maritime, and Security Group) and the Department.

Duties and Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Modelling and appraisal to inform policy priorities and developing Options Assessments and Impact Assessments when required for policy development and public consultation. This may include:
    - Reform of aviation passenger rights as set out in legislation.
    - Reform of ATOL (Air Travel Organisers Licensing) to ensure a financially resilient sector.
  • Analysis to support Aviation Directorate strategy work – seeking to understand the economic and market factors driving the aviation sector.
  • Analysis to support regular monitoring of the aviation sector’s commercial health, and ensuring robust evidence in the event of commercial issues in the sector.
  • Developing understanding of economic regulation of the aviation sector – and support DfT policy development. Helping to shape a regulatory approach which balances government objectives for the sector and the wider economy.
  • Line manage and provide professional development for an Assistant Economist.
