Bleakholt is a Registered Charity and is a Rescue and Rehoming Centre for a variety of animals. Our equines come to us for life and are not rehomed and are not ridden.
ROLE: Full time Animal Carer on the Stables section which includes horses, ponies, donkeys and mules. Hours are 36.75 per week on a rota including weekends, 6 days on and 2 off, 8.30 a.m. to 4 p.m. 7 hour days. NMW/NLW applies.
MAIN AIMS OF THE ROLE: To be part of the Bleakholt team that protects the welfare of animals in the Sanctuary, helping to assure the overall quality of care provided; carry out animal care duties – feeding, watering, cleaning of enclosures and bedding, exercise, grooming, training and rehabilitation; assist the vet and other specialists from time to time; liaise with visitors to the Sanctuary about the animals; to undertake ancillary roles such as cleaning, laundry, response to adverse weather conditions, minor maintenance tasks etc.
MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES (this is not a comprehensive list): Inspect all animals assigned to the role daily and identify, record and report any welfare concerns (e.g. illness, behavioural issues etc.) to Head of Section or Managers; carry out cleaning of enclosures, feeding, provision of water and change bedding daily; exercise and/or handle assigned animals as required; adhere to any measures/ barriers to control infections, quarantine procedures etc.; assist vet and other specialists as required; administer medications to animals as directed; give care to and deal with animals with underlying health problems, behavioural issues etc.; ensure that medical and other records of animals are accurate and up to date.
SPECIFIC STABLES DUTIES: Mucking out and replacing bedding in loose boxes etc.; leading horses and other equines in/out of the Stables to the fields, singly and/or in groups; lifting hay bales, straw bales and bags of feed etc. on a regular basis; use the power washer and blower to clean the yard; clean fields of horse dung and transport to the midden area; assist the vet, farrier and dentist as required, helping to administer medications and other procedures including euthanasia when necessary; work outdoors in all weather conditions and respond to adverse weather conditions e.g. snow, ice, storms, excessive rainfall as per protocols.

ESSENTIALS REQUIRED: Basic literacy/numeracy e.g. 3 GCSE's including English & Maths; basic computer literacy; experience in animal care with equines; experience of a physical job involving lifting, cleaning, working outdoors throughout a shift etc.; ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with Managers, Head of Section, team members, volunteers and members of the public; an interest and passion for animal welfare; ability to understand and follow working protocols; ability to use initiative and act decisively. You must be calm under pressure and be self-reliant with a positive, upbeat personality, a positive attitude and be reliable and enthusiastic. A good level of physical fitness to carry out the duties on a daily basis is required and a flexible approach to working hours and shift patterns, inc Bank Holidays/Xmas/New Year/weekends. Must be able to undertake occasional additional shifts or hours as required.
DESIRABLE: NVQ level 2 or 3 in Animal Care, NVQ 2 in another relevant subject; experience of working in a small Team on a shift basis; a commitment to knowledge and skill development; First Aid At Work Certificate; basic Health & Safety training.
As part of the recruitment process candidates will be required to undertake a practical test. Please note that this role does not involve any riding.
There is a probationary period of at least 3 months. NEST workplace pension subject to eligibility.
