The Tobacco Dependence Advisor for Inpatients will work across adult in-patient wards under the supervision of the Strategic Lead for tobacco dependence treatment services, undertaking tobacco dependence assessments, educating service users about options to manage their tobacco dependence differently, without harm from smoking and supporting quit attempts. The Tobacco Dependence Advisor for Inpatients will be responsible for creating personalised quit plans and assist service users to access the support they need for their quit attempt both during their inpatient stay and after discharge. They will also collect data in accordance with the metrics required by the ICS and NHSE monitoring. The Tobacco Dependence Advisor for Inpatients will play a key role within a wide multidisciplinary team, to raise awareness of the harm from tobacco and the effects on long term physical health, particularly for people with serious mental illness. Tobacco Dependence Advisor for Inpatients will develop links with other local & regional smoking cessations services closely liaising with local stop smoking services and work closely with the Local Authority Public health department as the referral pathway is developed. They will work with minimal indirect supervision operating within the assessed level of competence and being accountable for all aspects of own work. Key duties and responsibilities 1. To plan and deliver stop smoking advice and support sessions with indirect minimal supervision, including advice on stop smoking medications, working within recommended protocols and guidelines. Educate people and their families about the benefits of stopping smoking and give support to those wanting to quit. Prioritising and organising their own workload according to the needs of the service, ensuring equality, diversity and inclusion in all aspects of work.2. Respond effectively to referrals within stated timescales maintaining accurate up-to-date and comprehensive records at all times.3. Support the delivery of the service, key performance and reporting indicators for tobacco dependency. Ensuring the maintaining of clinical records, outcome data and review own personal performance against programme KPIs.4. Undertake relevant training to maintain the skills and knowledge as necessary through participation in continuous development.5. Support the delivery of tobacco dependence training to the multidisciplinary team, maintaining good working relationships with all levels of staff.6. Work with patients during their inpatient stay to engage them with an appropriate tobacco dependency pathway and support their transition to community stop smoking services if appropriate.7. Contribute to the long-term development of the secondary care tobacco dependency treatment service. Work closely with the local stop smoking services and the Local Authority PH team to ensure the work links to wider strategy. Foster good working relationships with tobacco dependency service team and staff within other teams and partner agencies to strengthen service delivery.8. Be involved in the monitoring and evaluation of client feedback, offering recommendations as part of the team to improve services and participate in evaluation of the service to inform future delivery and development.9. Be aware of how to report incidents, concerns or complaints and escalate any concerns or complexities to the Lead for Tobacco dependence treatment services and/or Safeguarding Team.10. Keep up to date with local and national policies and guidelines that impact on their role and participates in CPD. Work within the agreed and relevant policies and procedures and know how to access them.11. Listening and persuasive skills are valued along with a positive attitude towards change and maintaining a relationship with sometimes difficult or reluctant to engage clients. May have to overcome barriers to understanding, e.g. patient/client has physical impairment, mental health condition or learning disabilities. Factual clinical information will be needed to be shared using reassurance, tact, empathy etc.12. Communicate potentially sensitive information to service users and other health professionals and communicate effectively with a range of staff across disciplines, grades and organisations.13. Assist with audits relevant with the Smokefree services and participate in policies, audits and surveys in relation to their role.14. Any aggression towards staff is not tolerated by the Trust and the staff member is not expected to continue working with an abusive individual.15. Work with indirect minimal supervision, always operating within the assessed level of competence. Clear professional boundaries and limitations will be discussed and monitored by the Lead. 16. Ensure that the relevant equipment is provided and maintained on an agreed schedule. Report any failings of equipment or other environmental factors.
