Key Duties and Responsibilities:
• Comprehensive Evaluation of Mortgage Applications: Review and analyse incoming mortgage loan applications, ensuring that all supporting documentation has been submitted, is authentic, and is sufficient to support a lending decision. This includes income verification, employment status, asset and liability assessment, property valuation, and borrower creditworthiness.
• Risk Assessment and Decision-Making: Make independent underwriting decisions based on a risk-balanced approach, assessing each mortgage application for its financial and regulatory risk profile. This includes determining whether to approve, decline, or refer an application for further consideration.
• Application of Lending Policies: Apply internal lending criteria, financial models, and scoring systems to ensure decisions align with both company policies and risk appetite. Regularly contribute to the revision and enhancement of underwriting criteria as business needs evolve.
• Communication and Collaboration: Liaise with mortgage advisors, brokers, solicitors, valuation experts, and compliance teams to request additional documentation or clarifications where needed. Maintain professional and timely communication with internal stakeholders throughout the underwriting process.
• Legal and Regulatory Compliance: Ensure that all underwriting activities adhere strictly to legal requirements, including anti-fraud measures, data protection laws, and financial regulations. Ensure all files are documented in accordance with FCA guidelines and are audit-ready at all times.
• Automation and Technology Integration: Utilize underwriting software tools and contribute to the development and refinement of automation protocols to enhance efficiency and consistency. As part of our digital transformation goals, the Mortgage Underwriter will also collaborate with technical teams to ensure seamless integration of underwriting logic into system architecture.
• Ongoing Monitoring and Quality Control: Participate in post-approval reviews, conduct quality assurance checks, and provide feedback on the underwriting process to ensure continuous improvement. Report any observed trends in application errors, fraud risks, or policy inconsistencies.
• Portfolio Oversight: Monitor the performance of mortgage portfolios over time, flagging high-risk accounts and contributing to early intervention strategies. Provide risk-based commentary to assist in business decision-making and stress-testing scenarios.
• Customer-Centric Approach: While the role is analytical, it requires a strong sense of customer service. The underwriter is expected to ensure fair and impartial decision-making that also aligns with the company’s commitment to ethical lending practices and client satisfaction.
• Documentation and Reporting: Prepare detailed reports and summaries of underwriting decisions for review by senior management or regulatory bodies. Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all interactions, assessments, and decisions made.
• Training and Mentoring: Provide guidance to junior underwriters and support staff as needed, assisting with training and professional development in underwriting principles, compliance standards, and risk evaluation methodology.
• Market Awareness and Strategic Input: Stay informed about trends in the property and financial markets that may impact mortgage lending. Provide strategic input to the management team on potential risks or opportunities identified through underwriting activity.
• Conflict Resolution and Escalations: Manage complex or disputed cases by conducting deeper assessments and escalating matters to senior compliance or legal teams as appropriate. Exercise strong professional judgment and discretion.
• Internal Control and Audit Support: Assist in both internal and external audits by ensuring complete, accurate, and compliant documentation of mortgage files. Address audit findings in a proactive and transparent manner.
• Contribution to Policy Development: Engage in discussions related to lending policy, risk framework refinement, and process efficiency improvements. Share feedback and insights based on frontline underwriting experience.
• Ethical Conduct and Confidentiality: Maintain the highest standards of integrity, confidentiality, and professionalism when handling sensitive client and business information. Adhere to all company policies, including those governing data protection and ethical behavior.
